Safe Streets for All (SS4A)

The City of Allentown is steadfast in its pursuit of safer roadways and transportation networks. With a deep understanding of the profound impact that a well-structured Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Action Plan can have, the City is embarking on a transformative journey to prioritize safety enhancements and justify essential investments. The SS4A Action Plan will adopt a holistic approach to address safety concerns across all transportation modes and provide a roadmap for safety improvements with equitable outcomes at its core. The plan will include design guidance, performance objectives, and measures to ensure safety for all residents, regardless of their mode of transportation or background. It is a commitment to inclusivity that will set a new standard for safety enhancement while also representing the underrepresented residents of the city and beyond.

What is Safe Streets for All (SS4A)?

SS4A is a U.S. Department of Transportation program that provides grants to local communities for planning and implementation activities to prevent deaths and serious injuries on roadways. The City of Allentown received a Safe Streets for All grant to complete a SS4A Action Plan. Following the completion of the Action Plan, the City will apply for SS4A Implementation grants to implement interventions and improvements identified in the Action Plan.

What is the impact for you?

Our streets and walkways are vital components for every resident of Allentown. Enhancing them is vital to ensure that our daily interactions are safer and drive us towards achieving our "Vision Zero" goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries.

  1. Enhanced Public Safety: Safe streets directly contribute to a reduction in traffic-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
  2. Increased Mobility for Vulnerable Groups: Safer streets are particularly beneficial for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with disabilities.
  3. People Focused: Safer streets encourage more residents to engage in walking, cycling, and using public transportation.
  4. Cleaner Air: By making streets safer and thus encouraging non-motorized modes of transportation, cities can see a reduction in vehicle emissions.
