Curbside Collection Service Overview

 

Residents may place out trash and recycling between 5pm and 10pm on their collection night. Emptied containers and rejected items must be removed from the curb within 12 hours after collection. Report missed collections to the Recycling Office at (610) 437 8729.

Trash is collected twice a week with the following limits:

    • Up to 5 bags (30 gallons, 40 pounds each)  OR
    • 2 cans (32 gallons, 70 pounds each) per night
  •  

These limits refer to regular household trash, only, such as kitchen trash, bathroom trash, etc. Construction and bulk items have their own limit, listed in the section below.

Only accepted on the second night of your collection week (Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday) with the following limits:

1 bulk item

  • Large trash item (toilet, vacuum cleaner, lamp, etc.)
  • Piece of furniture (sofa, table, dresser, etc.)
  • Mattress & box spring, matching set (must be wrapped in plastic)
  • Vinyl window (tape an "x" onto the glass)

OR

40 pounds of construction material

  • Carpeting (limit is one room's worth, cut into 4ft strips, rolled up and tied or taped)
  • Paint cans (dried out, lids off, maximum of 3 one-gallon cans or 1 five-gallon bucket)
  • Loose debris such as wood/lumber, drywall, tile, etc. Must be bundled and tied or contained in a trash bag or trash can. Do not place in boxes for collection.

The following items are not collected as part of our curbside bulk collection. Please call the Recycling Office for disposal options.

  • Car parts or tires
  • Electronics (TVs, computers, printers, etc.)
  • Metal items or appliances
  • Concrete, stone, brick
  • Bowling balls
  • Upright or grand pianos
  • Hot tubs

Curbside recycling is UNLIMITED in the City of Allentown! Recycling is collected once a week on one of your designated pickup nights. Please refer to the map to determine your recycling night. 

  • Recycling must be placed out for collection in a City-issed recycling bin.
  • Recycling bins are available for pickup at 641 S. 10th St., Mon-Fri 8 am-4:30 pm.
  • Do not put your recycling in a plastic bag or trash bag. Put loose recycling straight into your recycling bin.
  • Curbside recycling in Allentown is single stream, meaning all recyclables (bottles, cans, cartons, paper, cardboard) can go into same bin together.
  • Bigger cardboard boxes may be flattened, bundled and placed next to your recycling bin.

Curbside yard waste is UNLIMITED in the City of Allentown! Yard waste is collected every other week, year-round. Please use this search tool to determine your collection night. Please also reference the attached map for the yard waste collection schedule.

  • We accept organic material only (grass, branches, hedge trimmings, garden waste, etc.)
  • Yard waste can be placed out in either brown paper lawn bags or rigid containers (no larger than 32 gallons). Yard waste will NOT be accepted in plastic bags or City-issued recycling bins.
  • Please place Yard Waste stickers on any rigid containers being used for collection. Stickers are available for pickup at the Recycling Office, or request by mail by calling 610-437-8729.
  • Piles of loose branches must be bundled and tied for collection.
  • Bamboo is NOT accepted as part of normal curbside yard waste. Please contact the Recycling Office for proper disposal instructions.

Curbside collections will be affected by the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • 4th of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

Cancelation announcements and set-out instructions for the affected area will be posted prior to the holiday. Residents in the affected collection zone will also receive an informational postcard in the mail.
