Be a Census Ambassador
Up to 17.25/hour; December 2019 to March 2020

The primary role of a Census Ambassador is to raise public awareness in the 2020 Census in Allentown, by engaging community members in person, and via digital methods. Among other responsibilities, the Census Ambassador will be a resource person on census information during neighborhood meetings, and a distributor of census flyers in high-traffic areas and places of business.

Qualifications

  • must be at least 18 years old
  • bilingual Spanish or Arabic candidates are highly desired
  • US citizenship is not required
  • work authorization in the United States is preferred

With the aim of attaining an accurate population count, the City of Allentown has been gearing up for Census Day 2020. Preparations include:

    • Highlights of Meeting:
      Census Hubs - City staff reported the selection of 17 census hubs in areas predicted by Census as low-response area in Allentown (see map). Through a memorandum of understanding with the City, these hubs will be sponsored by area non-profits and places of worship, who agreed to provide space in their respective facilities, and the supervised use of internet-capable computers during the census-taking period. To oversee the operation of these hubs, the City shall hire Census Ambassadors (through a third-party contractor) who shall be trained to provide relevant census information to area residents. City staff expects the hubs and ambassadors to be in place and ready by January 2020.
  • Partnership with the Census Bureau
    • Aside from being a member of the Allentown CCC, the Census Partnership Specialist has a regular presence at City Hall in Allentown, and will respond to questions and concerns regarding Census 2020 and it's job recruitment activity. The City has also designated a computer station in City Hall specifically for Census-related matters.

  • Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley's Health Equity Summit: Census 2020
    • Through the sponsorship of the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation, this event will take place on November 5th, from
      7:30 am - 11:00 am, at Lehigh University. The goal of the event is to build awareness about the Census 2020 among nonprofit organizations, and to give organizations tools and resources to be able to implement census related interventions in their organizations.

  • Drawing up a work plan, deployment strategy, and fund-raising activities.
