In the 1960s, Allentown adopted anti-discrimination policies to promote fairness and equal opportunity for all residents. To enforce these principles, the Human Relations Commission was established. The Commission works to ensure that everyone in Allentown has equal access to jobs, housing, and public spaces, protecting individuals from unfair treatment based on race, religion, disability, or other factors.
The Commission is made up of 13 members who work together to implement these policies. Their responsibilities include developing effective guidelines, investigating complaints of discrimination, fostering positive relationships among diverse community groups, and sharing information that encourages mutual respect. They also support the city’s long-term goals, including the 2030 plan, and assist the Mayor in achieving these objectives.
Candidates for the Commission should be committed to fairness, have experience in community service, and be willing to work collaboratively to help build a more inclusive Allentown.
The Human Relations Commission meets once a month on the first Thursday of the month from 6- 7 pm in City Hall in the City Council Chambers on the 1st Floor at 425 Hamilton Street, Allentown PA 18101, unless noted otherwise. The meeting, agenda and notes are provided on the city's Public Meeting Calendar.
