The Recycling Drop-off Center is open 24/7 for use by the general public and businesses - you do not have to live in Allentown to use this site.

Please be advised that this site is under camera surveillance. Dropping-off of unapproved items and the unauthorized removal of recyclable items is strictly prohibited. Violators will be ticketed.

 

 

We accept the following types of recyclable material:

We accept all types of paper, including (but not limited to):

  • Printer paper (white and colored)
  • Lined paper
  • Receipts
  • Junk mail
  • Envelopes (both with and without windows)
  • Folders
  • Magazines
  • Newspaper
  • Notebooks (with the binding removed)
  • Books (hardcover and softcover)
  • Paper bags (fast food bags, brown grocery bags, gift bags, etc.)
  • Wrapping paper (non-metallic)
  • Greeting cards (no glitter or embellishments)
  • Calendars
  • Post-It notes, flashcards
  • Shredded paper

We also accept all types of paperboard, including (but not limited to):

  • Toilet paper & paper towel tubes
  • Egg cartons
  • Tissue boxes
  • Boxes for dry goods (cereal, pasta, crackers, cake mix, etc.)
  • Frozen food boxes
  • Large mailing envelopes
  • Gift boxes
  • Cake/bakery boxes

Items NOT accepted with our mixed paper material:

  • Tissues
  • Napkins
  • Paper towels
  • Toilet paper
  • Paper plates
  • Disposable coffee cups
  • Ice cream cartons
  • 3-ring binders
  • Laminated papers

Items NOT accepted with our cardboard material:

  • Waxy cardboard
  • Styrofoam or packing peanuts
  • Plastic wrap

We accept aseptic cartons, like the ones used for:

  • Milk & cream
  • Non-dairy milk
  • Juice & juice boxes
  • Coconut milk
  • Broth/stock
  • Liquid eggs
  • and more!

We only accept clear and colored glass bottles and jars that are used for food and beverage packaging, such as:

  • Beer, wine, and liquor bottles
  • Olive oil
  • Apple cider vingar
  • Medicinal droppers
  • Mason/canning jars
  • Pasta sauce
  • Pickles
  • Maple syrup
  • Jellies and jams
  • Olives
  • and many many more!

NOT ALL GLASS IS RECYCLBLE!
We do NOT accept the following such items:

  • Window and door glass
  • Automotive glass
  • Mirrors
  • Picture frame glass
  • Drinking glasses and stemware
  • Plates and bowls
  • Cofee mugs
  • Pyrex and other baking dishes
  • Ceramic and porcelain

  • Plastic bags (grocery, retail, Ziploc, etc.)
  • Plastic wrap (from bulk paper towels, packs of water, microwave meals, etc.)
  • Plastic utensils (stirrers, spoons, forks, etc.)
  • Drinking straws
  • Styrofoam (to-go containers, cups & plates, packing material, etc.)
  • Bubblewrap and padded shipping envelopes
  • PVC pipes and other construction applications
  • Vinyl (garden hoses, pool liners, siding, fencing, etc.)
  • Clothing hangers
  • Car parts
  • Coolers
  • Children's toys
  • Other plastics not marked with a number

We accept bi-metal and aluminum cans, including (but not limited to):

  • Beverage containers (soda, seltzer, beer, etc.)
  • Non-perishable foods (tuna, soup, vegetables, etc.)
  • Dog and cat food
  • Bulk food packaging (tomato sauce, cooking oil, etc.)
  • Aerosols (hairspray, spray paint, etc.)
  • Tin/aluminum foil
  • Aluminum food trays (pie, cake, lasagna, etc.)

 

We also accept various scrap metal, including (but not limited to):
*Items must be at least 90% metal

  • Patio furniture (no cushions)
  • Shelving
  • Fencing
  • Large appliances (washers, dryers, ovens, etc.)
  • Small appliances (toaster, microwave, air fryer, etc.)
  • Grills (no propane tanks)
  • Bicycles
  • Lawn mowers (all liquids removed - oil, gasoline, etc.)
  • Construction waste (rebar, gutters, pipes, faucets, fixtures, etc.)
  • Window and door frames (all glass removed)
  • Car parts (rims, disc brakes, exhaust, etc.)
  • Exercise equipment (treadmill, eliptical machine, weight bench, free weights, etc.)

Items requiring a fee:

All items containing FREON or another chemical refrigerant : Refrigerators, freezers, water coolers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc.

  • $20 fee per item must be prepaid prior to drop-off
  • Pay the fee in person at the Bureau of Recycling & Solid Waste at 641 S. 10th St, Allentown PA 18103. Payments accepted Mon-Fri from 8am to 4pm.
  • PPL is offering rebates for residents who recycle their working refrigerant appliances with them. Please visit their website for more details.

Clothing and textile drop-off is made available at our site thanks to Via of the Lehigh Valley. Dropped off items are distributed to textile recyclers where they are resold, reused, or recycled – keeping them out of landfills and helping the environment!
Items must be in decent condition (dry, no stains, no tears, ect.) and must be dropped off in closed bags. 

The following items are accepted:

  • All sizes of clothing (infant, child, adult, plus sizes, etc.)
    • Tops - shirts, tanktops, sweatshirts, jackets, etc.
    • Bottoms - shorts, skirts, pants, jeans, etc.
    • Footwear - sneakers, loafers, sandals, boots, slippers, etc.
    • Accessories - hats, belts, scarfs, gloves, etc.
  • Blankets
  • Towels
  • Curtains

We are currently accepting confidential documents for destruction 6 days a week, at not cost.

This drop-off service is available Monday-Friday from 9am to 3pm, and Saturday from 9am to 10:30am.
During these hours, the site attendant will place your documents into a locked container for them to be destroyed at a later date.

Rules:
-Staples are okay, but no larger items like paper clips or binder clips.
-Please only bring confidential documents. Things like junk mail, magazines, folders, etc. do not require destruction and should instead be recycled with regular paper.

The list below contains examples of items that we DO NOT accept at the Recycling Drop Off Center. Please be advised that this is not a complete list. If you need assistance with disposing of any of these items, please contact our office.

Avoid a ticket! If you are ever unsure whether an item is acceptable, please contact our office first to verify.

  • Household trash
  • Wooden furniture
    • Headboard/footboard, box spring, dresser, night stand, bookshelf, desk, end table, coffee table, dining table, dining chairs, china cabinet, etc.
  • Upholstered furniture
    • Mattress, sofa, loveseat, chaise lounge, armchair, recliner, ottoman, computer chair, etc.
  • Non-metal car parts
    • Bumper, fender, head light/tail light, window/windshield, mirrors, tires, seats, dashboard, radio, speakers, subwoofer, etc.
  • Non-metal construction materials
    • Wood/lumber, dry wall, brick/cement, tile, shingles, window glass, vinyl siding, house wrap, insulation, toilet, sink, bathtub, shower pan/insert, cabinets, lightbulbs, carpeting, paint, etc.
  • Electronics
    • TV, VCR/DVD player, computer, laptop, tablet, internet router, printer, radio, speaker, amplifier, subwoofer, turntable/record player, phones, batteries, etc.
  • Hazardous waste
    • Propane tanks, motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, kerosene, medical waste, etc.
  • FREON appliances that have not been prepaid for
