June 4, 2025 – The City of Allentown has unveiled plans for a new, state-of-the-art Life Safety & Wellness Center to be located at 4th Street and West Turner Street, consolidating the city’s Central Fire Station, EMS Department, and Health Bureau into a single modern complex designed to meet current safety standards and community needs.

The project is the result of a comprehensive feasibility study led by Alloy5 Architecture and CHA Engineering.

The city’s existing Central Fire Station, located at North Hall and West Chew Streets, was originally built in the 1920s and retrofitted into a firehouse in 1946. Today, it operates with just six engine bays—insufficient for the current fleet—and poses multiple safety and compliance issues. Notably:

  • The 100-year-old building has critical infrastructure deficiencies.
  • There is no decontamination space for fire or EMS staff.
  • The facility lacks dedicated locker or bunk room space for female firefighters.
  • The site does not meet modern National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.

Similarly, the Allentown Health Bureau—currently housed in the aging Alliance Hall—faces challenges related to HIPAA compliance, training space, and modern public health operations.

The proposed Allentown Life Safety & Wellness Center includes:

  • A new three-story Central Fire/EMS station with 10 engine bays
  • A modern three-story Health Bureau with expanded space for clinics, training, and privacy
  • A four-story, 300-space parking garage
  • Dedicated entrances for Fire/EMS and Health operations
  • Green space and a “Community Corner” for public engagement

Renderings and additional details are available in the Feasibility Study, which is also available online at www.allentonwpa.gov/fire.
