Juneteenth—short for “June Nineteenth”—commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure all enslaved people were freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This celebration is organized by the Department of Parks and Recreation and Allentown Juneteenth Committee and made possible through collaboration with numerous community partners, sponsors, volunteers, and local organizations.
