2024 Juneteenth Pageant Guidelines

-Pageant is open to African American Students in grades 6 through 12 who attend school in the City of Allentown
        Jr. Juneteenth King and Queen (Grades 6 through 8)
        Juneteenth King and Queen (Grades 9 through 12)

- Contestants are required to be present during the celebration on 6/15/24 at Cedar Beach Park and June 19th 2024 in downtown Allentown

- Pageant winners are encouraged to dress in formal wear for the crowning ceremony

- Contestants are encouraged to wear cultural attire for the crowning ceremony

- Good Sportsmanship is required at all times by the contestants, parents and guests. 

- Contestants must submit application by May 17th, 2024. King and Queen pageant winners will be selected by June 5th, 2024

- Juneteenth Educational Grants will be awarded to both King and Queen pageant winners

Contestants will be judged by:

- 1 page essay on one of the following topics:

1. What does Juneteenth mean to you?

2. Describe how you can incorporate Juneteenth into your community and school?

3. Do you think Juneteenth has made a difference in the lives of African American people?

4. Since June 19th, 1865, when the proclamation was declared in your opinion have you seen any change?

Registration is now open for the City of Allentown’s Flag Football Skills and Drills program
 
This is a FREE flag football program offered by the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation for girls ages 7-17.
 
The program is being run by Kayla Millan, coach of SheDifferent flag football. This program is tailored to introduce football fundamentals to beginners, as well as to help refine the efforts of more skilled players.
 
Sessions will be held on weekends from 10:00am to 12:00pm beginning on April 6th through May 25th.

Join us for King of the Court, an exciting six-week basketball program offered by the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation! This program is designed for boys in grades 6 to 12 who live in or attend school in Allentown, perfect for both beginners and those looking to refine their skills.

Program Highlights:

  • Dates: September 24 to October 29, 2024
  • Sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
    • Grades 6-8 & Grades 9-12 will have separate activities and breakout groups during the same timeframe.
  • Focus Areas:
    • Essential basketball skills (from fundamentals to advanced techniques)
    • Strategic play
    • Life skills: teamwork, self-confidence, and leadership
  • Special Feature: Each Tuesday, enjoy Yoga and Mindfulness sessions led by Alvin Johnson from Bearded Yoga Life, emphasizing athlete wellness and mental mindfulness.

About the Lead Trainer:

Don Dentith will lead the basketball training sessions. He has an impressive background, having been the leading scorer at Pen Argyl High School and completing his athletic and educational career at Millersville University. With six years of coaching experience at The Feeder Program and 15 years of basketball training under his belt, Don brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the program.


About Alvin Johnson:

Alvin Johnson is a dedicated yoga instructor and mindfulness educator with a passion for promoting wellness among young athletes. He began his yoga journey in 2017, initially seeking to enhance his physical fitness. However, he quickly discovered that yoga encompasses much more than physical poses; it offers invaluable tools for mental and emotional well-being. In 2021, Alvin completed his RYT 200 certification through the Yoga & Ayurveda Center and later became an Ayurveda Specialist, allowing him to integrate holistic practices into his teaching.

Alvin specializes in Power Yoga, focusing on strength, flexibility, and mobility, but he also offers gentle and vinyasa styles to cater to different needs and abilities. As a board member and mindfulness instructor with the Mindful Child Initiative, he is committed to equipping students and parents with practical mindfulness tools. His sessions will not only help participants unwind after basketball training but also cultivate focus and resilience, essential skills for both sports and everyday life.

Participants will engage in comprehensive basketball training, focusing on fundamental skills, advanced techniques, and strategic play. The program also emphasizes essential life skills such as teamwork, self-confidence, and empowerment, providing a supportive and inspiring environment for personal and athletic development.

Program Details:

  • Location: Executive Education Academy
  • Dates: September 24 to October 29, 2024
  • Sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
    • Grades 6-8 & Grades 9-12 will have their sessions during the same time frame, with activities or breakout sessions organized to effectively address the different age ranges.

About the Lead Trainer:

This year’s program features Quindell Brice, owner of QBriceTraining. Quindell is currently a Varsity Assistant at Pocono Mountain West High School Boys Basketball Program. He has an impressive athletic background, including being named to the 6A All-State team, earning the Mountain Valley Conference MVP award, and being recognized as the VIA Player of the Year. Additionally, he was named Pocono Record Player of the Year and made the Morning Call All-District XI team. Quindell completed his athletic and educational career at East Stroudsburg University in Sports Management, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the program.

Focus on Wellness:

This fall, we are emphasizing Athlete Wellness and Mental MindfulnessAlvin Johnson from Bearded Yoga Life will lead Yoga and Mindfulness sessions every Tuesday throughout the program. 2024 SUMMER PLAYGROUND PROGRAM
The City of Allentown’s free eight-week summer playground program begins Monday, June 17th
 
The program includes playground activities and free lunch for children ages 7-to-15 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. There are currently 17 participating locations.
 
Daily participants will be eligible to win free prizes at the end of the season, including bicycles, scooters, skateboards, sporting equipment, arts and crafts supplies.
 
Those who participate will also be invited to the 110th end of year ‘Romper Day Celebration’ on Monday, August 5th at 7 p.m. at J. Birney Crum Stadium.

The City’s summer playground program began in 1914 when General Harry C. Trexler and Mrs. Trexler sponsored an outing called “Romper Day.” The celebration is the culminating event of the summer and consists of various games, relay races, and dances.

Registration for the summer playground program can be done on-site but pre-registration is strongly recommended.

Adult Programs

The Allentown Department of Parks & Recreation is offering free pickleball instruction for youth (10+) and adults at the Andre Reed (Irving) pickleball/tennis courts on the city's east side.

Instruction Schedule:

  • Saturday, October 5: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Youth & adults age 10+)
  • Saturday, October 12: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Youth & adults age 10+)
  • Saturday, October 19: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Youth & adults age 10+)
  • Saturday, October 26: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Youth & adults age 10+)

Important Information:

  • Spots are limited to 16 participants per session.
  • Sessions are open to both residents and non-residents.
  • Instruction will be led by Carol Robb
  • The first hour will focus on instruction and introduction to the game, while the second hour will feature supervised play.
  • Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done online.

The City of Allentown in collaboration with Sarah Shea Yoga present the 2024 Yoga Fest from May through October.

These FREE classes are open to all and will feature a rotating group of Allentown based Yoga Instructors, vendors and more!

Pre-Registration is highly encouraged.   

It is recommended that Participants bring a water bottle and yoga mat. Sunscreen and sunglasses are encouraged. 

All classes will take place at either the Arts Park or the Malcolm Gross Memorial Rose Garden.

Registration is now open for the Summer 2024 Adult Volleyball League organized by the City of Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation.
 
The Adult Volleyball League is open to both men and women in seven divisions:
 
Monday: Men’s A, BB
Tuesday: Women’s A, BB
Wednesday: Co-Ed
 
**If there isn't enough interest in each division, you will be contacted directly about combining into one division. There is currently a cap on each division at 6. It may be adjusted dependent upon interest.

All games are played at Patriots Park at 1027 W Wyoming Street and scheduled by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
 
Teams will play a 10-game schedule. The top teams in each division advance to playoffs.

Rosters limited to 12 players. (during matches 6 players/ 3 subs)

The deadline to register is May 17th, and league games will begin on June 3rd.
 
The registration cost is $200. This fee is all-encompassing. No other referee or playoff costs are charged.

The City of Allentown Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a live workshop through Positive Coaching Alliance at Trexler Middle School’s cafeteria on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:30pm.
 
PCA workshops combine the latest in sports and educational psychology and organizational behavior with practical advice from a National Advisory Board of top pro and college athletes and coaches who use our principles at the highest levels of competition. The workshops are all highly interactive and facilitated by PCA Trainers with deep experience in coaching, sports parenting, and athletic administration.

The live workshop will be facilitated by certified PCA Trainers and will last from 90-120 minutes. Participants receive tangible and practical tools while involving everyone in the process of learning together.

Hector Rosado y su Grupo

Hector Rosado is an internationally acclaimed percussionist, bandleader, arranger, educator and recording artist. He has performed and toured with many notable performers in the world of Latin music, including his salsa band “Hector Rosado y Orchestra Hache” which he founded in 2001. Broadening his scope to the world of Latin Jazz, he created his “Hector Rosado Latin Jazz Ensemble Siete” group in 2008.

Starting his life in the Steel City, Hector is one of five sons of Puerto Rican immigrants raised on the south side of Bethlehem. He was inspired by a neighborhood Motown Band when he first started playing congas. His mother encouraged him at age 10 by taking him by bus to purchase his first conga in the Bronx. By age 16, he sought his own apprenticeship in NYC seeking out the master Eddie Montalgo as his mentor. Soon after, Hector was opening-up shows for Ray Barretto, his hero. In total, Hector’s career spans nearly four decades.

Currently, Hector spends his time playing music in the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York.

Midway Manor Concert Series 

The City of Allentown’s Summer Concert Series is back for the 2024 year with a new spin. This year there will be 4 Saturday dates where will be hosting satellite concerts at Midway Manor. 

All of our concerts are free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and come relax and enjoy the open-air concerts in our marvelous Allentown parks.

If the Saturday in the Park concerts are cancelled due to inclement weather, they will be rescheduled to a later date in the summer.

Union Terrace Concert Series 

The City of Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation in collaboration with The Rise Up Experience inc. unveils the return of concerts to the Union Terrace Amphitheater! The Union Terrace Concert series occurs every second Saturday at the Union Terrace Amphitheater from 4:00-10:00pm from May through September.

Each event includes a variety of recreational activities such as flag football, soccer and volleyball presented by MVP360 Management LLC as well as featuring various food, beverage, and resource vendors.

West Park Concert Series 

The City of Allentown’s Summer Concert Series is back for the 2024 year and offers multiple concerts each week from May to September. These concerts are held at the historic West Park.

Fishing and Fun In The Park is BACK!

Join us for the 8th Annual Fishing and Fun in the Park event on Saturday, September 28th at Lehigh Parkway, Iron Bridge from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Hosted by the City of Allentown Department of Parks & Recreation and The Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living, this event offers a day of inclusive and accessible outdoor fun for all ages and abilities.

Event Highlights:

  • LVCIL Arts, Crafts, and Oversized Games
  • City of Allentown Departments with activities for everyone
  • Community Partners from around the Lehigh Valley
  • Fishing: No fishing license is required for the event!

Food Vendors will be on site offering refreshments for purchase.

Join us for the 28th Annual Lights in the Parkway, a beloved holiday tradition that transforms Lehigh Parkway into a mesmerizing winter wonderland. This year, enjoy an enchanting drive-thru experience featuring spectacular light displays from the comfort of your vehicle.

Event Details:

  • Dates: Friday, November 29, 2024, through Saturday, January 6, 2024
  • Hours: 5:30pm to 10:00pm nightly. Closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

  • Magical Drive-Thru Display: Experience a spectacular one-mile journey through Lehigh Parkway, featuring 175,000-200,000 twinkling string lights and over 90,000 illuminated bulbs. Marvel at festive scenes including twinkling tunnels, Santa and his reindeer, and more—all from the comfort of your vehicle.
  • Move it Mondays: Starting December 2, join us every Monday from 5:30pm to 10:00pm for Move it Mondays. Enjoy a unique experience by walking, running, or biking through the light displays.
