Whether you’re looking to have fun, relax, or enjoy some delicious food, there’s something for everyone.

Registration is now open for the City of Allentown and Muhlenberg Colleges Girls Wrestling Camp.

This is a FREE wrestling camp offered by the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation and Muhlenberg Colleges Wrestling Staff for girls grades 2-8.

The program is being run by Travis Spencer, coach of the Muhlenberg College Womens Wrestling Team. This program is tailored to introduce wrestling fundamentals to beginners, as well as to help refine the efforts of more skilled players.

The first camp will be held on June 23rd - June 26th. Grades 2-8 will be from 9:00am to 11:00.

The second camp will be held on July 8th - July 10th. Grades 2-8 will be from 9:00am to 11:00.

Divisions:
The tournament is organized into different age-based divisions for both boys and girls. Teams must register for the appropriate division based on the age group of their players. Please refer to the divisions below:

Important Deadlines:

  • Uniform Size Deadline: Please submit your team's uniform sizes by April 21st to ensure we have the proper sizes available for your players. Send your uniform size information to Ebonee McPherson at ebonee01.em@gmail.com. The deadline has passed. All Teams who did not send sizes will receive various sizes for their teams.
  • Final Team Registration Deadline: The final deadline to register your team is June 6th.
  • Rosters: Teams are limited to 12 players

This team-based tournament is part of our Juneteenth celebration, and we invite youth teams from across the region to hit the field and compete for bragging rights. Format: 5-on-5 Flag Football
Team Entry Fee: $200 per team

2024 Juneteenth Pageant Guidelines

-Pageant is open to African American Students in grades 6 through 12 who attend school in the City of Allentown
        Jr. Juneteenth King and Queen (Grades 6 through 8)
        Juneteenth King and Queen (Grades 9 through 12)

- Contestants are required to be present during the celebration on 6/15/24 at Cedar Beach Park and June 19th 2024 in downtown Allentown

- Pageant winners are encouraged to dress in formal wear for the crowning ceremony

- Contestants are encouraged to wear cultural attire for the crowning ceremony

- Good Sportsmanship is required at all times by the contestants, parents and guests. 

- Contestants must submit application by May 17th, 2024. King and Queen pageant winners will be selected by June 5th, 2024

- Juneteenth Educational Grants will be awarded to both King and Queen pageant winners

Contestants will be judged by:

- 1 page essay on one of the following topics:

1. What does Juneteenth mean to you?

2. Describe how you can incorporate Juneteenth into your community and school?

3. Do you think Juneteenth has made a difference in the lives of African American people?

4. Since June 19th, 1865, when the proclamation was declared in your opinion have you seen any change?

The City of Allentown invites the community to join its 2025 Juneteenth Celebration—a four-day series of events from Thursday, June 19 to Sunday, June 22—honoring freedom, culture, and community.

*In recognition of the federal holiday, all City of Allentown offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19.

  • Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony – 12 PM at Allentown City Hall in partnership with Resurrected Life, St. James AME, and Union Baptist Church
  • Free Cedar Beach Pool Admission – 12 to 7 PM for Allentown residents (capacity permitting)

Friday, June 20

  • Free Outdoor Movie Night: Mufasa: The Lion King – Gates open at 7:30 PM and movie begins at sunset at Cedar Beach Pool (Rain date: June 21). Free popcorn and giveaways, as supplies last. Mufasa: The Lion King voice cast includes several prominent Black actors. In the movie, Mufasa, meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny.

Saturday, June 21

The Juneteenth Basketball Classic is also hosted all weekend at the Cedar Beach Park basketball courts and welcomes athletes from across the region.

Juneteenth—short for “June Nineteenth”—commemorates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure all enslaved people were freed, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is considered the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

This celebration is organized by the Department of Parks and Recreation and Allentown Juneteenth Committee and made possible through collaboration with numerous community partners, sponsors, volunteers, and local organizations.

This is a FREE flag football program offered by the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation for girls ages 7-17.
 
The program is being run by Kayla Millan, coach of SheDifferent flag football. This program is tailored to introduce football fundamentals to beginners, as well as to help refine the efforts of more skilled players.

The City of Allentown is thrilled to offer its free eight-week summer playground program for children aged 7 to 15. This program includes a variety of fun playground activities and provides free lunch.

Program Details:

•     Lunches: Free lunches will be served from Tuesday through Friday, starting in June.
Romper Day Celebration: On Monday August 4th, participants will be invited to the 111th annual 'Romper Day Celebration,' which features games, relay races, and dances. This tradition, which began in 1914 with General Harry C. Trexler and Mrs. Trexler's "Romper Day," continues to be a highlight of the summer.

Adult Programs

The Allentown Department of Parks & Recreation is offering free pickleball instruction for youth (10+) and adults at the Andre Reed (Irving) pickleball/tennis courts on the city's east side.

Instruction Schedule:

Important Information:

  • Spots are limited to 16 participants per session.
  • Sessions are open to both residents and non-residents.
  • Instruction will be led by Carol Robb
  • The first hour will focus on instruction and introduction to the game, while the second hour will feature supervised play.
  • Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done online.

Additional Notes:

  • If the sessions are full, you can still register to be added to the waitlist or to be informed about future pickleball opportunities in Allentown.

The City of Allentown Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a live workshop through Positive Coaching Alliance at Trexler Middle School’s cafeteria on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:30pm.
 
PCA workshops combine the latest in sports and educational psychology and organizational behavior with practical advice from a National Advisory Board of top pro and college athletes and coaches who use our principles at the highest levels of competition. The workshops are all highly interactive and facilitated by PCA Trainers with deep experience in coaching, sports parenting, and athletic administration.

Summer Concerts

Get ready for the return of Bomba at the Beach in 2025! The City of Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with Puerto Rican Culture Preservation Inc., is bringing back this vibrant series with five exciting events throughout the summer at Cedar Beach Park.

Each event will feature a variety of delicious food, beverages, local vendors, and live entertainment, including the soulful rhythms of Bomba music and dance. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy Puerto Rican culture, connect with the community, and have a blast with friends and family!

The City of Allentown is excited to bring back the Midway Manor Concert Series for 2025! This year, enjoy four incredible Saturday evening concerts in the beautiful outdoor setting of Midway Manor.

ArtsQuest, in partnership with the City of Allentown, is thrilled to announce the ArtsQuest’s Friday Concerts at Union Terrace Amphitheater, a new summer concert series designed to bring music and community together in the heart of Allentown. 

This free, family-friendly concert series invites all residents of Allentown, especially those in the Union Terrace Park neighborhood, as well as visitors from across the Lehigh Valley, to enjoy live music in a relaxed, neighborhood-style atmosphere. All concerts will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. 

In addition to music, there will be several food options including Taco Town and La Frikitona with more forthcoming.  

General street parking can be found on Union Street and Walnut Street with a parking lot on S. St. Elmo Street; ADA parking lot near the corner of Walnut and S. St. Elmo Streets; and Circle, Steel and Platinum ArtsQuest Members will have access to a parking lot on S. St. Elmo Street.

These performances are free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and unwind while enjoying live music in the beautiful surroundings of Allentown’s parks.

Fishing and Fun In The Park is BACK!

Join us for the 9th Annual Fishing and Fun in the Park event on Saturday, September 29th at Lehigh Parkway, Iron Bridge from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Hosted by the City of Allentown Department of Parks & Recreation and The Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living, this event offers a day of inclusive and accessible outdoor fun for all ages and abilities.

Event Highlights:

  • LVCIL Arts, Crafts, and Oversized Games
  • City of Allentown Departments with activities for everyone
  • Community Partners from around the Lehigh Valley
  • Fishing: No fishing license is required for the event!

Food Vendors will be on site offering refreshments for purchase.

Join us for the 28th Annual Lights in the Parkway, a beloved holiday tradition that transforms Lehigh Parkway into a mesmerizing winter wonderland. This year, enjoy an enchanting drive-thru experience featuring spectacular light displays from the comfort of your vehicle.

Event Details:

  • Dates: Friday, November 29, 2024, through Saturday, January 6, 2024
  • Hours: 5:30pm to 10:00pm nightly. Closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.


Event Highlights:

  • Magical Drive-Thru Display: Experience a spectacular one-mile journey through Lehigh Parkway, featuring 175,000-200,000 twinkling string lights and over 90,000 illuminated bulbs. Marvel at festive scenes including twinkling tunnels, Santa and his reindeer, and more—all from the comfort of your vehicle.
  • Move it Mondays: Starting December 2, join us every Monday from 5:30pm to 10:00pm for Move it Mondays. Enjoy a unique experience by walking, running, or biking through the light displays. This free event is open to all ages and abilities and provides a special opportunity to enjoy the holiday magic up close.

  • Price: $16 per vehicle (up to 8 passengers) or $26 for commercial vans, minibuses, or limousines under 14 feet. Online processing fees apply.
