Bureau of Recycling & Solid Waste

The City of Allentown is suspending bulk item curbside collection effective the week of March 29 until further notice as a result of the COVID-19 Disaster Emergency

This decision was made between the city’s contracted hauler, Waste Management, and the administration in accordance with the terms of the contract.

The suspension of bulk item collection will enable Waste Management to devote its resources to the more essential collection of regular household trash.

  • Bulk items, by ordinance definition, includes “any specific municipal waste item that does not fit in a 32-gallon trash can or in a 30-gallon trash bag, which include but is not limited to furniture, mattresses, etc.” Construction debris will not be collected either.
  • Waste Management has been directed by the city to place rejection notices on any bulk items placed out for collection during this time.
  • Bulk items that are not removed from the curb are subject to a SWEEP violation ticket with additional costs.
Additionally, for the health and safety of the trash collection employees:
  • All household trash must be in plastic bags and may not be placed loosely inside a trash can. This safety measure will contain household waste in a manner that is safer for the collection employees.

Regular trash and recycling collections continue across the city.

The effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is resulting in some changes to the City of Allentown's special event recycling programs.

The Bureau of Recycling & Solid Waste is cancelling the scheduled Saturday, April 4 electronics recycling event and April 15 and April 18 paper shredding events.

Electronics and paper shredding recycling are suspended until further notice. No appointments are being scheduled.

Reporting a missed trash or recycling collection?
Here are a few things to remember:

  • Trash and recycling must be placed at the curb between 5:00pm and 10:00pm.
  • The hauler has until 12:00 noon the following day to finish collections.
  • Prior to reporting a miss, check to see if your neighbor’s trash and/or recycling has been collected. It’s possible they haven’t been to your area yet.
  • Any item rejected at the curb must be removed within 12 hours.
  • For collections in the Friday night collection zone, please call the office by 10:00am Saturday and leave a detailed message on the answering machine to ensure your missed items will be collected by 1:00pm.
  • Misses reported after 10:00am on Saturday will be collected by 10:00am Monday morning according to the City’s contract.

  • Too much recycling. In the event that you have excess recycling that won't fit in your city issued recycling bin, please call our office at 610-437-8729 for set out instructions.
