The City of Allentown will open Jordan and Mack pools this summer on an alternating daily basis due to a lack of certified lifeguards.
As a result, Mack Pool will be open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and Jordan Pool will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Irving Pool will be closed for this season.
“We simply have not been able to certify enough lifeguards to open all four pools on a daily basis,” said Director of Parks & Recreation Lindsay Taylor. “Dating back to the middle of spring we had more than enough teenagers apply for the job, but they either found other work, decided to pass on the opportunity, or were unable to pass the certification testing. We would certainly reconsider the decision if we could certify more guards, but at this point, it seems unlikely.”
Persons interested in becoming a lifeguard can apply through the city’s website at https://www.allentownpa.gov/Human-Resources/Employment-Openings.
Cedar Beach Pool and Bucky Boyle Park and Old Fairgrounds Playground Spray Parks are open daily from 12:00pm to 7:00pm.
In the event of a Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning posted by the National Weather Service this summer, pool admission on those days will be half price for Allentown residents only. Cedar Beach Pool is restricted to Allentown residents only on weekends and holidays.
