Start of Tilghman Street Bridge Rehab Postponed

Start of Tilghman Street Bridge Rehab Postponed

A scheduled January 17 start of a project to rehabilitate the Tilghman Street Bridge over the Lehigh River, Norfolk Southern Railroad, waterfront development and city streets is being postponed again. The closure has been postponed a second time due to adverse weather conditions, in this case forecast cold temperatures.

With the cold temperatures forecast, removal of existing pavement markings and painting new markings is an issue. As such, reconfiguration of the existing intersections/signal and signal re-timing is not possible. At this time, contractor D.A. Collins Construction Co. does not have a date as to when the bridge will close as it is more or less weather dependent.

When the project begins, Tilghman Street will be closed and detoured between Front and Dauphin streets. The posted detour will utilize Front Street, American Parkway, North Bradford Street and Dauphin Street. Motorists are advised to expect delays and use caution traveling on the detour route.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on the bridge throughout construction.

Work on the project includes bridge rehabilitation, deck replacement, roadway approach reconstruction, lighting upgrades, drainage work, concrete curb and sidewalk upgrades, signing and pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.

The Tilghman Street Bridge is a 12-span concrete open spandrel arch bridge originally constructed in 1929 and reconstructed in 1995. It is 1,387 feet long and 53 feet wide. This section of Tilghman Street has an average daily traffic of 17,398 vehicles.

The nearly $22 million project is expected to be complete in June 2021.
