Human Relations Commission Accepting Award Nominations

The Human Relations Commission of the City of Allentown is seeking nominations for its 2017 awards.

The award ceremony honors community members who celebrate Allentown’s diversity through their long-term commitments to a better city for all who live and work here. It will be held on Tuesday, December 5 at 6pm in City Council Chambers.

“I am honored to be mayor of such a great city with outstanding diversity,” Mayor Ed Pawlowski said. “During this celebration, the city formally recognizes those individuals and organizations that have worked diligently to advance equal opportunity in Allentown. I strongly encourage all citizens to nominate someone in the community deserving of this recognition.”

“Businesses and people with exemplary diversity and inclusion practices help lead the way to greater mutual understanding among all residents of Allentown and make our city a better place for all people to live, work and do business,” said Human Relations Committee Chairperson Jessica Lee Ortiz. “We are extremely pleased to be able to re-establish the Human Relations Award program in the city. It is important that we celebrate the diversity and inclusion that has attracted so many to this growing city.”

The Commission will hand out a total of eight awards to recipients in three age groups and to two organizations or businesses and an additional overall award.

Ortiz said, “We are looking for people and businesses or organizations that are furthering the aims and goals of the Commission. We are searching for those folks that do extraordinary work to enhance the lives of their neighbors and others in the community that don’t have the means to help themselves.”

There will be two youth awards for persons age 18 and under, two adult awards for persons ages 19 through 59 and two senior awards for persons age 60 and over.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, November 17 at 4:00pm. Nomination forms are available at https://www.allentownpa.gov/Government/Authorities-Boards-Commissions/Human-Relations-Commission-of-the-City-of-Allentown, or by contacting Human Relations liaison Ismael Arcelay at ismael.arcelay@allentownpa.gov.
