Street Reopening Eases MLK Traffic

The contractor for the Eighth Street Bridge rehabilitation project in the city of Allentown will temporarily reopen Harrison Street while Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive is closed for bridge repairs.

Reopening Harrison Street on Wednesday, August 31 will provide additional access to 10th Street to help reduce congestion at the intersection of Wyoming Street and 10th Street. Harrison Street will remain open until MLK, Jr. Drive is reopened. Once MLK, Jr. Drive is reopened, Harrison Street will then be closed to complete bridge substructure repairs toward the south end of the bridge.

MLK, Jr. Drive has been closed from Lehigh Street to 15th Street since June 28 for concrete repairs required on the underside of the Eighth St. Bridge.

The detour prevents traffic from passing under the Eighth Street Bridge while repairs are being made to the supporting columns and arches of the bridge. The contractor is removing loose concrete materials and performing repairs of deteriorated portions of the bridge.
