Andre Reed Park Dedicated

The City of Allentown formally honored native son, Dieruff High School graduate and NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Reed today by unveiling signs for Andre Reed Park and Andre Reed Way.

Reed told a crowd of some 200 persons that "Thirty-four years ago as a high school senior, I never would have thought or envisioned that my name would be on a street and on a park, especially in front of this high school."

City Council voted unanimously last October to rename Irving Park “Andre Reed Park” and to rename a portion of Washington Street between Irving and Jerome streets alongside Dieruff High School “Andre Reed Way.”

Reed said he was overwhelmed by the honor.
"I was just a kid going to high school here. We played over there in the park, practiced over here, we swam over there, we might have gotten in trouble a little bit over there. But one thing that I realize is we all were family here. We all looked after each other. That's what this park and this street is about."

Reed starred on the gridiron at Dieruff High School and Kutztown University and became a record-setting wide receiver on the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, playing in four consecutive Super Bowls during a 16 year career with Buffalo and the Washington Redskins.  He was inducted in the Hall of Fame last year.  Fifteen years after the end of his playing career, Reed still holds a number of Buffalo single season and career receiving records.

Mayor Ed Pawlowski, City Council President Ray O'Connell, City Councilman Daryl Hendricks, Allentown Schools Superintendent Dr. Russ Mayo and Dieruff High School Alumni Association President John Hughes paid tribute to Reed during a 20 minute ceremony prior to the unveiling.
