Adventure Allentown Awarded for Excellence

The City of Allentown’s Adventure Allentown publication continues to pile up awards.

Adventure Allentown has received a "2014 APEX Award of Excellence" in the "Publication Design & Layout" category. The award competition is run by Communications Concepts Inc., which also publishes "Writing that Works News," which is devoted to helping communicators write, edit and manage more effective business publications.

In 2009, the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, Inc. (PRPS) selected Adventure Allentown as winner of its annual Excellence in Agency Publication competition. Following in 2013, Adventure Allentown received an APEX Award in “Magazine & Journal Print.”

Adventure Allentown contains information on special events, youth and adult programs, city parks and golf course, music and theater programs, local museums and other useful information for city park and recreation services. The guide also includes maps of parks and recreation areas, event schedules and a comprehensive list of community agencies dedicated to youth, adults and senior citizens.

APEX Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications excellence. Adventure Allentown was one of nearly 3,800 entries in 11 major categories, with more than 100 subcategories.

Adventure Allentown has been a big hit since its first issue in 2008,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “We use it to help inform residents and visitors about programs that highlight our commitment to fitness, healthy lifestyles, the arts, and economic vitality through events that capitalize on Allentown’s greatest assets. I am very proud of the work done by the staff to produce this award-winning publication two times a year.”

The next edition of the Fall & Winter Adventure Allentown will be distributed in late September 2014. Some 70,000 copies will be distributed throughout the city: through Allentown School District students, The Morning Call newspaper, at various businesses and in outdoor publication racks throughout the city’s park system. In addition, the guide can be downloaded at www.allentownpa.gov/parks.

Adventure Allentown design work is contracted through Publication Design, Inc., of Breinigsville, and is completed in collaboration with city staff.
