700 Block of Hamilton Closure Extended

Poor weather and the large amount of buried utilities are forcing an additional one week closure of Hamilton Street between Seventh and Eighth streets in the City of Allentown. Originally scheduled to be completed by tomorrow, the additional time will allow for hand excavation around the existing utilities. Should weather cooperate and the congestion below the road surface ease, crews will make every effort to open the road ahead of the new Saturday, April 5 completion schedule.

Project officials regret any additional inconvenience resulting from this extended closing and appreciate the community’s continued patience in their efforts to complete this venue.

The reason for the road closure is to complete a very deep tie-in and manhole installation to the existing sanitary sewer located on the south side of Hamilton Street proper. Work includes road surface removal, trench and manhole excavations up 17 feet deep, pipe and manhole installation, backfill and road surface repair.

Due to the depth and width of the excavation, the work area cannot be temporary plated to resume traffic in the evenings. There is no interruption of sewer service to businesses or residents.
