A Snow Emergency remains in effect in the City of Allentown. It will stay in effect until further notice. That means that parked vehicles must be moved from all Snow Emergency Routes and should not return until the Snow Emergency is lifted.

“We need to push the snow to the curb to keep the traveling lanes as wide as possible, and we will be removing snow as necessary along some snow emergency routes,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski.

Snow removal operations began today on Chew Street and are scheduled to be expanded to 15th Street and Tilghman Street on Saturday weather permitting.

“I know the lack of parking and the presence of large pieces of equipment is an inconvenience, but we need the cooperation of the public to make those removal operations go as smoothly and quickly as possible,” Pawlowski added.

By ordinance, a “snow emergency,” requires owners to remove their vehicles from posted routes. Signs are posted on snow emergency routes, which are also published on the city website, www.allentownpa.gov. Vehicles left on designated routes during the snow emergency will be ticketed and towed.

Private contractors have been retained to remove snow from other locations in the city.

Madison St from Allen St to Winton St
Franklin St from Early St to MLK
Fulton St from Linden St to Elm St and Turner St to Washington St
St Cloud St from Maple St to South St and Turner St to Chew St
West St from Gordon St to South St
St George St from Tilghman St to Liberty St and Chew St to Linden St

The city began to remove snow from those areas today. Parking is not permitted in those areas until the snow is removed.

Other snow removal areas have been posted for Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16.

The city asks residents to avoid throwing snow back onto the streets.

The Authority properties will remain open until after the snow emergency is lifted.

Parking is also available at the Allentown Fairgrounds. Motorists should enter at Gate 8 near the intersection of Liberty and St. Cloud streets. The Fairgrounds can accommodate approximately 150 vehicles.

Residents are asked not to place items in the street in an attempt to save parking spaces. The city also requests resident participation in clearing snow from storm sewer drains and fire hydrants.

Residents should go to the city website or avail themselves of local news media sources to learn when the snow emergency is lifted.
