Andre Reed Participating in Park Clean Up
Allentown’s Andre Reed Park will get a sprucing-up this weekend courtesy of a team of volunteers led by the NFL Hall of Famer himself!

Andre Reed, staff from the Andre Reed Foundation, members of the Dieruff High School football team and youth from the Boys & Girls Club of Allentown will get to work on Saturday, June 29 beginning at 11:00am.

Volunteers will split-up into crews to mulch the playground area, pull weeds, paint the outside of the pool house, remove litter and sweep paths and sidewalks.

Some 40 to 50 volunteers are expected, including some of the participants in the 10th Annual Andre Reed Celebrity Golf Classic scheduled for Monday, July 1 at Lehigh Country Club. The 2018 classic field included 16 retired stars from the NFL and the NBA.

Reed starred on the gridiron at Dieruff High School and Kutztown University and became a record-setting wide receiver on the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, playing in four consecutive Super Bowls during a 16-year career with Buffalo and the Washington Redskins. He was inducted in the NFL’s Hall of Fame in 2014.

City Council voted unanimously in October 2014 to rename Irving Park “Andre Reed Park” and to rename a portion of Washington Street between Irving and Jerome streets alongside Dieruff High School “Andre Reed Way.”

“Andre and his Foundation have been important contributors to city causes,” said Mayor Ray O’Connell. “I think it is great that he is pitching-in at the park and that youth volunteers are joining him in the effort.”

According to the Foundation website, the Andre Reed Foundation was established in 2010 by Andre Reed to help underprivileged children reach their full potential and become responsible contributors to their communities. Headquartered in Allentown, the not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization has supported local charities, including the Boys & Girls Club of Allentown, Communities in Schools, Easter Seals and the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley.
