Starting on Monday, May 16, the Wire Mill (S. Lehigh Street) Bridge will be closed for replacement. The Lehigh County owned bridge crosses the Little Lehigh Creek and carries S. Lehigh Street, S.R. 145, located in the City of Allentown.

The existing bridge is a 2-span steel I-beam bridge with an open grate deck, constructed in 1940.  The superstructure of the bridge bears upon stone masonry abutments and a stone masonry pier.  The bridge span is approximately 116 feet and has a curb-to-curb width of 42 feet.  Both sides of the existing bridge have sidewalks.

The current project, which will be managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, includes the demolition of the existing structure and includes the construction of a new 2-span bridge that will carry 4 lanes of traffic (2 lanes in each direction) and will include sidewalks.

The Notice to Proceed for the project was issued on January 20, 2020.  The bridge has remained open to traffic while the various utility companies located adjacent to or on the bridge completed the work to upgrade and relocate their facilities.  The bridge contractor, Kinsley Construction, Inc., has constructed a temporary pedestrian bridge along the westerly side of S. Lehigh Street. 

Pedestrians can use the temporary bridge during construction to cross the Little Lehigh Creek.  However, vehicular traffic will be detoured beginning May 16, 2022, when the bridge will be closed.  Construction is scheduled to be completed and the new bridge opened to traffic on December 2, 2022.  The crew working hours are anticipated to be 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A partir del lunes 16 de mayo, el puente Wire Mill (S. Lehigh Street) estará cerrado por reemplazo. El puente, que es propiedad del condado de Lehigh, cruza Little Lehigh Creek y lleva S. Lehigh Street, S.R. 145, ubicado en la ciudad de Allentown.

El puente existente es un puente de vigas en I de acero de dos vanos con una cubierta de rejilla abierta, construido en 1940. La superestructura del puente se apoya sobre pilares de mampostería de piedra y un pilar de mampostería de piedra. El tramo del puente es de aproximadamente 116 pies y tiene un ancho de acera a acera de 42 pies. Ambos lados del puente existente tienen aceras.

El proyecto actual, que será administrado por el Departamento de Transporte de Pensilvania, incluye la demolición de la estructura existente e incluye la construcción de un nuevo puente de 2 tramos que transportará 4 carriles de tráfico (2 carriles en cada dirección) e incluirá aceras.

El Aviso de Proceder para el proyecto se emitió el 20 de enero de 2020. El puente ha permanecido abierto al tráfico mientras las diversas empresas de servicios públicos ubicadas junto al puente o sobre él completaron el trabajo para mejorar y reubicar sus sitios. El contratista del puente, Kinsley Construction, Inc., ha construido un puente peatonal temporal a lo largo del lado oeste de S. Lehigh Street.

La gente puede usar el puente temporal durante la construcción para cruzar Little Lehigh Creek. Sin embargo, el tráfico vehicular se desviará a partir del 16 de mayo de 2022, cuando se cerrará el puente. La construcción está programada para completarse y el nuevo puente se abrirá al tráfico el 2 de diciembre de 2022.
