Three Projects Awarded RACP Grants

The Da Vinci Science Center, Coca-Cola Park and the Allentown Housing Authority are recipients of the latest round of Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program Grants from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Grant announcements were made yesterday in Harrisburg.

Da Vinci will receive all $8 million it requested for a $65 million, 67,000 square foot facility in the 800 block of Hamilton Street to be called the Da Vinci Science Center at the PPL Pavilion. The three-floor structure will contain 30,000 square feet of exhibit space and room for traveling exhibits. An estimated 60 new full-time jobs will be created at the new downtown center with groundbreaking expected in the spring.

Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs minor league baseball team, will receive $2 million of the $5 million it sought to expand the clubhouse, male and female locker rooms, training facilities, hydro space, and development of a centerfield entrance.

The Allentown Housing Authority will receive $500,000 of its $2 million application for affordable units in the city. The request was part of a two- phase project for Little Lehigh Redevelopment - Phase I would consist of the demolition of nine existing structures and the new construction of five buildings plus a community building in their place. Phase I would have 50 total units: 13 one-bedrooms; 15 two-bedrooms, 15 three-bedrooms, and seven four-bedrooms.

The grants are administered by the governor’s Office of the Budget. Funds are allocated for the acquisition and construction of civic, cultural, economic, historical and recreational improvement projects.
