APD Awarded $50,000 State Grant
The Allentown Police Department will use a $50,000 state grant to purchase safety and related equipment.

The funds come from the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development’s Economic Development and Community Development Initiatives program.

“We thank the Wolf Administration and our state delegation for their work to secure the funds for the department,” said Mayor Ray O’Connell. “The safety products and equipment will enhance the force’s ability to adequately respond to and serve the community.”

The funds will be used to purchase four ballistic shields, a rifle shield, 60 ballistic helmets for patrol officers, a situational awareness camera that will enable officers to have more effective visibility at night, enhancing their ability to resolve emergency situations and new uniform shirts with patch and badge attachments.

“The men and women of the Allentown Police Department have a tough and often dangerous mission in ensuring the safety of all city residents. Providing the resources and equipment necessary for officers to perform this critical task is paramount,” Senate Appropriations Chairman Pat Browne said. “I applaud the Department’s leadership and city administration for their ongoing dedication to properly equipping and outfitting those in the field.”

"In order for the Allentown Police Department to fulfill their job of public safety, they need to have the tools and resources to be successful,” State Representative Peter Schweyer said. “This funding allows the APD to acquire the resources to work collectively with the community to protect our neighborhoods and eliminate violence."

State Representative Mike Schlossberg said, “The brave women and men of the Allentown Police Department are tasked with the challenge of keeping our communities safe. While we continue to work with leaders in our neighborhoods to eliminate violence, it’s also our job to help keep police and the people they are called to protect safe with the resources to respond under the most-dire circumstances.”

The department's shirt vendor has gone out of business. The department must now purchase new uniform shirts available in a different color option. Police administration has set of goal of having all officers in the new uniforms by January 1, 2021. The proposed purchase will assist in meeting that goal.
