New Police Officers Take Oath
Five new police officers were sworn-in during a ceremony in City Council Chambers this morning where the department also awarded badges to seven recent academy graduates and announced two promotions.

Mayor Ray O’Connell and Police Chief Glenn Granitz Jr. presided as Daniel Mrozowski, Thomas Geib III, Daniel Detrick, Justin R. Williams and Adam C. Reyes took the oath of office.

Detrick and Reyes are part of the new academy class.

Mrozowski, Geib III and Williams are already Act 120 Certified. They received their department badges along with December 2019 academy graduates Irenee Ibemsi, Todd Sterner, Rody Collado, Bailey Keintz, Kyle Dunn, Austin Ortwein and Manar Makhoul.

“We have a premier police department in the city of Allentown,” said Mayor O’Connell. “Chief Granitz, Assistant Chief Vangelo and our captains are capable and dedicated leaders and the men and women on patrol and in the specialized divisions follow their guidance. It is my pleasure to welcome the new officers to the department.”

Chief Granitz said, “Today is a wonderful look into the future of the Allentown Police Department. These new officers, who are joining our department and receiving their badges, show that our agency is a destination of choice for people wishing to pursue law enforcement as a career. These officers will have the opportunity to become invested in the revitalization of our city and department. The officers introduced here today exemplify the increasing diversity within our police force and the promotions signify that hard work and determination does pay off within the rank structure of APD. Keep in mind that this spring we will announce multiple ways of joining APD as we look to reach our full complement of officers and increase the safety of our neighborhoods.”

Officer Mrozowski is a graduate of Parkland High School. He is a United States Marine Corps veteran. He is Act 120 Certified through the Allentown Police Academy in December 2019. He was hired in July 2019 and is assigned to the 1st Platoon.

Officer Geib is a graduate of Emmaus High School. He served in the United States Army. He is Act 120 Certified and graduated from the Allentown Police Academy in June 2019. He was hired in December 2019 and is assigned to the 1st Platoon.

Cadet Detrick is a graduate of Agora Cyber Charter School. He is currently pursuing a Business Management degree at Northampton Community College. He was hired in December 2019 and is currently attending the Allentown Police Academy for his Basic Act 120 Police Training.

Officer Williams graduated from Liberty High School and attended Northampton County Community College. He is Act 120 Certified and graduated from the Allentown Police Academy in September 2018. He was hired in December of 2019 and is assigned to the 4th Platoon.

Cadet Reyes graduated from Hialeah Senior High School in Hialeah, FL and attended Post University. He was hired in December 2019 and is currently attending the Allentown Police Academy for his Basic Act 120 Police Training. He was in the United States Army National Guard.

Officer Ibemsi is assigned to the 3rd Platoon. He is a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Africa and holds an Associate of Applied Science majoring in Social Science from Luzerne County Community College. He is attending King’s College.

Officer Sterner is also assigned to the 3rd Platoon. He graduated from Northampton Area High School and is attending Lehigh Carbon Community College. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Officer Collado is assigned to the 1stPlatoon. He is a graduate of Carteret High School in New Jersey and attended Union County College. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Officer Keintz is assigned to the 2nd Platoon. He graduated from Hamilton High School North in Hamilton, New Jersey, attended Mercer County Community College and is attending Northampton Community College. He is a member of U.S. Navy Corps Reserve.

Officer Dunn is assigned to the 4th Platoon Squad “C.” He is a graduate of Washingtonville High School in New York and holds an Associate of Applied Science majoring in Criminal Justice from Orange County Community College (SUNY Orange).

Officer Ortwein is assigned to the 4th Platoon Squad “A.” He graduated from Nazareth Area High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).

Officer Makhoul is assigned to the 2nd Platoon. He is a Dieruff High School graduate and attended Lehigh Carbon Community College.

The Act 120 certified officers who recently graduated from the academy or just joined the force are all currently involved in field training.

Chief Granitz also announced promotions to lieutenant and sergeant.

Lieutenant Daniel Gross joined the department in January 2002. Lieutenant Gross was assigned to various units within the department including patrol and the investigative services division. He was promoted to his current rank of lieutenant in December 2019 and assigned to the 4th Platoon. Lieutenant Gross is a graduate of Perkiomen Valley High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Bloomsburg University.

Lieutenant Gross has received 7 Commendations: 1 for Bravery, 2 for Achievement and 4 for Merit.

Sergeant Mark Jarrouj was hired in February 2009. He has been a member of the Emergency Response Team for the past seven years and served as a member of the Strategic Enforcement Division. Sergeant Jarrouj has spent most of his APD career with the 3rd platoon patrol division. He was promoted to his current rank of sergeant in January and is assigned to the 1st Platoon. He served four years in the United States Marine Corps and earned the rank of corporal. Sergeant Jarrouj is a graduate of Northwestern Lehigh High School. He holds an Associate in Arts, Criminal Justice Administration from Lehigh Carbon Community College.

Sergeant Jarrouj has received 10 Commendations: 4 for Bravery, 3 for Achievement and 3 for Merit.
