Closures

The following schedule outlines the planned phases for the Realignment and Center Square Project. All dates are subject to change based on weather and field conditions.

Pre-Construction Activities

  • April 20 – April 24, 2026
    Site preparation, mobilization, layout, and exploratory pipe locating.

Construction Phases

  • Phase 1 – NW Corner (PPL Center)
    April 27 – May 21, 2026
  • Phase 2 – SW Corner (702 Hamilton St)
    May 21 – June 12, 2026
  • Phase 3 – NE Corner (2 City Center / 645 Hamilton St)
    June 10 – August 5, 2026
  • Phase 5 – Linden St & 7th St (West Corners)
    July 15 – August 7, 2026
  • Phase 4 – SE Corner (County Building and Vault)
    July 31 – October 5, 2026
  • Phase 6 – Final Paving (Full Project Length)
    September 22 – November 6, 2026

Hamilton Street Streetscape (600–700 Block)

  • Start Date: May 11, 2026
  • Duration: Approximately 70 working days

This work will be coordinated with the realignment and plaza improvements to maintain consistent traffic patterns.


Traffic Closures and Impacts

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

  • Lane and parking restrictions will be in place throughout the duration of the project.
  • Additional updates will be provided as each phase progresses.

April 20 – April 24, 2026

  • Traffic controlled by flaggers
  • No full lane closures anticipated

Phase 1 – Lane Closures

  • Hamilton Street:
    South lane closure westbound from 7th Street (in front of the PPL Center)
  • 7th Street:
    West lane closure southbound through the Hamilton Street intersection

JD Eckman will be conducting ramp closures the weeks of June 21st and June 28th to complete mill and overlays on three mainline bridges and ramps. This work will occur between 8:00pm and 5:00am Sunday through Friday nights. No work will occur between the following dates and times for the Independence Day holiday - Thursday, July 2nd at 5:00am through Tuesday, July 7th at 8:00pm. At no time will more than one ramp be closed.

Impacted rapmps for this work are as follows:

  • 78 Westbound Emmaus Avenue exit, ramp "LG" (2 nights)
  • Lehigh Street North to 78 Westbound, ramp "LA" (2 nights)
  • Lehigh Street South to 78 Eastbound, ramp "LDD" (2 nights)

Starting on Monday May 4th, 2026 through the end of June 2026, The Standard apartment building at 101 N 6th Street will be starting the road work for the pedestrian bridge to go over the top of 6th Street just north of the Allentown Transportation Center (ATC). This work will require lane closures and at time full closure of 6th Street from Linden Street to Turner Street. The scheduled full closures at the time will be on Wednesday May 6th starting at 7pm until Thursday May 7th ending at 7am. This closure is to set the bridge structure in place and secure it. An additional full closure if also scheduled for Monday May 11th from 8am to 4pm to pour the concrete deck for the pedestrian bridge.

The ATC and LANTA will be making changes to the busing platform due to the installation. Platform A is being shifted to Turner Street between 6th Street and 7th Street on the south side of Turner Street. This changover will be happening on Monday, May 4th. Wayfinding signage is being added to the ATC in order to give riders a better idea of the buses new location for the duration of the bridge construction.

LCA work is as follows for the week of June 23rd water service renewals

  • June 29th - 1342 West Walnut Street between South 14th Street and South Madison Street - road closed
  • June 30th - 334 North Church Street between Chew Street and Gordon Street - road closed
  • July 1st - 931 West Tilghman Street between North New Street and North Fountain Street - one lane with traffic control
  • July 2nd  - 1510 West Union Street between South 15th Street and South Rush Street - road closed

Norfolk Southern will be working on railroad crossings at the following locations which will result in road closures for 24 - 72 hours at each crossing. This is part of an upgrade project that stretches from Allentown to Blandon, PA.

  • July 6th - Auburn Street just west of Basin Street
  • July 8th - 12th Street and Vultee Street intersection
  • July 9th - 31st Street south of Lehigh Street

Will remain closed for a street reapir until 8:00am Thursday, June 4th.
