October 21, 2025 – The City of Allentown is announcing the start of lane restrictions and closures in the area of 7th and Hamilton Streets beginning Monday, October 20, 2025, as part of the Center Square Redesign Project. This initial phase of work involves waterline upgrades necessary to support the broader infrastructure improvements in Center Square.

The Lehigh County Authority will be performing the waterline replacement work in five phases over the next several weeks. The schedule is as follows:

  • October 20–22: Lane restrictions only
  • October 23–29: No left turn onto Hamilton Street while traveling south on 7th Street
  • October 30–31: Lane restrictions only
  • November 3–4: No right turn onto 7th Street while traveling east on Hamilton Street
  • November 5–14: Lane restrictions only

This work marks the initial stage of the project. Additional road closures, lane restrictions, and detours will be shared as the project advances in the spring. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and expect delays when traveling through the intersection during construction periods.

The Center Square Redesign Project aims to reimagine the intersection surrounding the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, improving pedestrian safety, reducing traffic conflicts, and creating more public gathering space in downtown Allentown. The project emerged from a series of community workshops where residents shared ideas for how to make Center Square safer, more connected, and more inviting. The redesign will re-route vehicle traffic around the monument, opening new opportunities for people to walk, gather, and celebrate downtown events.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Ongoing updates about construction and downtown access are available online at www.allentownpa.gov/streetclosures.
