About Us

Our community is undertaking key capital projects to enhance parks, recreational spaces, and outdoor facilities. These efforts aim to improve quality of life, support healthy lifestyles, and strengthen community connections as our region grows.

Current projects include developing new park spaces, renovating existing areas, and enhancing walking and biking trails with improved accessibility, seating, and clear signage. These improvements will encourage outdoor fitness and provide safe, connected routes for everyone.

CURRENT AND UPCOMING PROJECTS

Master Plan

  • Help shape the future of our parks! As part of our Parks Master Plan, these initiatives align with long-term goals to create vibrant, sustainable spaces that meet the needs of our growing population. Your input is vital in shaping the design, improvements, and amenities of local parks.

Jordan Skatepark

  • The Jordan Park Skatepark Phase 2 Project involves completing the skatepark by installing the remaining features. This project aims to provide a high-quality facility with features for both beginners and advanced skateboarders, bikers, and other wheeled sports. By completing this phase, the park will offer more opportunities for the community to engage in sports activities, while enhancing the overall amenities of the park.

D&L Trail

  • The D&L Trail project involves the design and construction of a multi-use paved trail from the existing trailhead on N Bradford St, following on-street routes to N Dauphin St, continuing through Kimmett's Lock, and extending to the city boundary, where it will connect with the D&L Trail in Hanover Township. This project aims to provide a trail for recreational use and as a commuter trail for those who travel by means other than car.

Rehabilitation includes lifting the bridge with a crane to correct its sag, replacing any damaged timbers, installing a new slate roof, and repainting the bridge to restore its original appearance.

Roosevelt Park

  • This project includes demolishing the existing pool house building (near the tennis courts), which is in poor condition, and constructing a new pavilion near the playground and basketball courts.

Dixon Street Pedestrian Bridge

This will reconnect neighborhoods and provide a safe crossing for children who use the bridge to get to school.

Mack Pool Renovations

  • The Mack Pool Renovations project includes removing the existing baby and middle pools, replacing them with a zero-depth entry splash pool, and repairing the existing lap lane pool in the same location. We are currently collecting public feedback on which of the two design options residents prefer. This is needed as we are applying for a grant to be able to complete these renovations. The grant will potentially cover design and construction, so there will be more opportunities to provide feedback during the design phase. Help us shape the future of Mack Pool! Review the two design options below and share your feedback using the survey link.

Urban Forestry

  • This project includes an Urban Forestry Master Plan, tree inventory, and species selection for street and park trees. Goals include increasing tree canopy, improving air quality, and reducing heat in urban areas. As part of a USDA and American Forests grant, we’ll also plant more than 300 trees in underserved neighborhoods.

Franklin Park

  • This project involves the design of Franklin Park. A consultant has been selected and will begin once the contract is finalized.

2025 COMPLETED PROJECTS

Steven’s Park Full Size Basketball Court

  • Completed: July 18, 2025
  • Installation of a new full-size basketball court to complement the park's existing recreational facilities. This project aims to provide a high-quality, flexible space for both casual play and competitive games. By adding the full-size court, the park will offer more opportunities for the community to engage in sports activities, while enhancing the overall amenities of the park.

Soccer Mini-Pitch at Jordan Meadows

  • Completed: April 29, 2025
  • This project transformed an underused hockey rink at Jordan Meadows Park into a new, ADA-compliant 60’ x 120’ Soccer Mini-Pitch. Featuring LED lighting, seating, and lockable storage, the space offers safe, accessible recreation for youth in a high-poverty neighborhood.
  • As part of Allentown’s Vision 2030 plan, the mini-pitch supports free youth sports programming that promotes physical activity, teamwork, and mentorship. It also serves as a positive outlet to help reduce crime and strengthen community connections.
