In continued recognition of Earth Day, the City of Allentown has awarded two Love Your Block Public Space Improvement mini-grants in the First and Sixth Wards as part of the program’s first cycle, supporting resident-led efforts to strengthen neighborhoods and enhance public space.

The selected projects will focus on transforming public spaces to increase community connection, neighborhood pride, and the revitalization of shared spaces. City staff will work alongside residents to support volunteer efforts and bring these projects to life. Implementation of projects will begin in May, with all projects expected to be completed by August 31, 2026.

Cycle one awardees:

·       Allentown A’s Home Team Pride: The project will revitalize Bucky Boyle Park’s football field by planting shade trees, making site improvements, and adding a community mural. The enhancements aim to create a safer, more welcoming space for players, families, and neighbors.

·       Hibernia Park Revitalization: Located outside the Hibernia Fire Station, the project will restore a well-used but aging pocket park. Planned improvements include new benches, landscaping, signage, and waste receptacles to create a more functional and inviting space for the surrounding community.

Three additional strong applications were selected for a waitlist and may be considered for future funding.

With support from the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, the Love Your Block program brings city leaders and residents together to build stronger neighborhoods, one block at a time.
