Allentown received $1.3 million for upgrades to traffic signals through PennDOT’s “Green Light-Go” program.

The City of Allentown is pleased to announce that it received $1,378,560 for upgrades to traffic signals at twelve intersections along American Parkway, 3rd Street, and 4th Street through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT’s) “Green Light-Go” program.

The project includes installing a traffic adaptive system with new controller, video detection, radio communication and GPS emergency pre-emption.

The City of Allentown will oversee completion of the project and will need to select an engineering firm for the design traffic signal permit and obtain PennDOT permitting approval.

The plan will then go out for bid and once construction and installation is complete, PennDOT will do a final inspection.

The grant requires the City to complete the work within three years.

Green Light-Go grants are provided as reimbursements to municipalities for updates to improve the efficiency and operation of existing traffic signals. Grant funding through the Green Light-Go program may be utilized for a range of operational improvements including, but not limited to, light-emitting diode (LED) technology installation, traffic signal retiming, developing special event plans and monitoring traffic signals, as well as upgrading traffic signals to the latest technologies.
