Serious Crime Declines in City

Violent crime fell in the City of Allentown from 2016 to 2017.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Uniform Crime Report statistics, the Part I crimes of homicide, aggravated assault, rape, robbery, burglary, theft and arson dropped to 3,872 in 2017 from 3,907 in 2016, or just under 1 percent. The number of Part I crimes topped 6,200 in the city ten years ago.

The 2017 decrease was highlighted by a 32 percent decrease in nonfatal gun assaults and a 5 percent decline in armed robberies. There were 17 homicides in the city in 2017, the most since 2008. Two of the homicides were ruled justified.

“We are working hard every day to cut down on the incidence of crime in the city,” said Chief Glen Dorney. “We are also doing a good job of solving crimes and bringing the perpetrators to justice, but we need continued help from the public. Their eyes and ears are essential to helping the men and women of the department keep their neighborhoods safe and helping us get criminals off the streets.”

Dorney has a 2018 goal of establishing a six member community crime suppression unit to attack crime in troubled neighborhoods. “The team will be focused on rooting out crime in a particular area before moving on to any other assignment.”
