Closures

The following schedule outlines the planned phases for the Realignment and Center Square Project. All dates are subject to change based on weather and field conditions.

Pre-Construction Activities

    Site preparation, mobilization, layout, and exploratory pipe locating.

Construction Phases

  • Phase 1 – NW Corner (PPL Center)
    April 27 – May 21, 2026
  • Phase 2 – SW Corner (702 Hamilton St)

  • Phase 3 – NE Corner (2 City Center / 645 Hamilton St)

Hamilton Street Streetscape (600–700 Block)

  • Start Date: May 11, 2026
  • Duration: Approximately 70 working days

This work will be coordinated with the realignment and plaza improvements to maintain consistent traffic patterns.


Traffic Closures and Impacts

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

  • Lane and parking restrictions will be in place throughout the duration of the project.
  • Additional updates will be provided as each phase progresses.

Phase 1 – Lane Closures

  • Hamilton Street:
    South lane closure westbound from 7th Street (in front of the PPL Center)
  • 7th Street:
    West lane closure southbound through the Hamilton Street intersection

Starting Monday March 9, 2026 from 9am to 3pm Hamilton Street will have a lane closure.  UGI will be starting the gas line relocation as part of the Center Square Project.  UGI will be utilizing the four parking areas along Hamilton Street on both sides of the road just east and west of 7th St.  Two of these parking areas will be able to be open while not actively working.  The line relocation is expected to last 6-8 weeks.

Starting on Monday May 4th, 2026 through the end of June 2026, The Standard apartment building at 101 N 6th Street will be starting the road work for the pedestrian bridge to go over the top of 6th Street just north of the Allentown Transportation Center (ATC). This work will require lane closures and at time full closure of 6th Street from Linden Street to Turner Street. The scheduled full closures at the time will be on Wednesday May 6th starting at 7pm until Thursday May 7th ending at 7am. This closure is to set the bridge structure in place and secure it. An additional full closure if also scheduled for Monday May 11th from 8am to 4pm to pour the concrete deck for the pedestrian bridge.

The ATC and LANTA will be making changes to the busing platform due to the installation. Platform A is being shifted to Turner Street between 6th Street and 7th Street on the south side of Turner Street. This changover will be happening on Monday, May 4th. Wayfinding signage is being added to the ATC in order to give riders a better idea of the buses new location for the duration of the bridge construction.

On Wednesday May 27th to Monday June 1st from 8:00am to 4:00pm, 15th Street from Fairmont Street to Pennsylvania Street will be closed for sinkhole remediation from a previous water main break.

Starting on Wednesday May 27th through Friday May 29th from 8:00am to 4:00pm, 6th Street from Hamilton Street to Turner Street and Linden Street from 5th Street to 7th Street will have lane closures for the installation of conduit for school flashers.

Starting on Wednesday May 27th through Friday May 29th for 24 hours a day, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from Junction Street to Franklin Street will be closed to west bound traffic for LCA to do work on their water main. 

Cedar Street, between 7th St to 5th St, will be closed today until 3:30pm for milling. 

Livingston Street, betweeen 23rd St to 24th St will be closed today until 3:30pm for paving. 

Corn Street, between Saucon to Front St will be closed today until 3:30pm due to alley reconstruction.
