Health Bureau Urges Pet Vaccinations

The Allentown Health Bureau reminds citizens to vaccinate their pets to prevent rabies, which is a fatal disease.

The reminder follows a report that a skunk found in the city has tested positive for rabies. On Tuesday, September 1, the skunk was observed behaving oddly in the 1100 block of South Hall Street. The skunk was sent by the city’s animal control officer to a Pennsylvania Department of Health lab for testing, which confirmed his suspicion.

The diseased skunk did not come into contact with residents or pets.

Allentown Health Director Vicky Kistler says the discovery serves as a reminder to all citizens that rabies can be found in stray or wild animals. As always, residents are advised to refrain from petting, touching or feeding stray or wild animals.
