Lights in the Parkway Opens Friday

Allentown’s 18th season of Lights in the Parkway opens for the weekend on Friday, November 29 at 5:30pm in Lehigh Parkway.

This spectacular drive-through dazzling light display set to music transforms more than a mile of one of Allentown’s most beautiful parks, the Lehigh Parkway, into a winter wonderland. Featuring hundreds of thousands of brilliant lights – this attraction will brighten your holiday season. Visitors will experience tunnels, animated holiday scenes and more. “Lights” has become an annual tradition for many throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Lights in the Parkway is fun for all ages.

Due to popular demand, Lights in the Parkway will again be open over the Thanksgiving Holiday, from November 29 – December 1. The season will officially open nightly (except for Christmas) from December 6, 2013 – December 31 from 5:30 – 10pm.

Admission is $10 per car. A $2.00 off coupon is available at www.lightsintheparkway.com. Cash or check only is accepted at the ticket booth. Cash is preferred.

Another exciting feature for this year’s event: the fourth annual Lights in the Parkway 5K and Walk! The City of Allentown has again partnered with Run Lehigh Valley to provide this unique opportunity to enjoy the spectacular display. The event will take place on the evening of Wednesday, December 4. The event will begin at 7 o’clock, with runners and then walkers following. Register and see course at www.runlehighvalley.com. Space is limited. No race day registration is accepted.

Horse-drawn carriage rides are so well received, they will again be offered by reservation only. Please visit the Lights in the Parkway website www.lightsintheparkway.com for more information or call 610-730-4973. The price is $15 per person.

At the end of the route, patrons are invited to visit the Gift Barn which features fine crafts and unique gift ideas for everyone on your holiday shopping list. Hot chocolate, popcorn, cookies and other refreshments are also offered inside the Gift Barn. There is also an opportunity to have photos taken with Santa Claus by Dan’s Camera City. Santa will be present at the gift barn Wednesday, and Friday through Sunday from 5:30-9:30 starting 11/29 and ending on Christmas Eve. Visit Lights in the Parkway for a $5.00 off coupon to get a package starting at just $14.99.

Credit cards are accepted in the Gift Barn. Carriage reservations must be made with a credit card.

The city’s annual Downtown Tree Lighting ceremony will be held on Thursday, December 5 from 4pm-7pm in the pocket park in the 800 block of Hamilton Street next to PPL Plaza. This free event is presented by the city and the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce and is sponsored by the Hamilton District Main Street program and The Morning Call.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Dave Fry and Allentown School District students. Performances are also scheduled by Burning Hearts Fire and Light Theatre and YEA! There will be horse-drawn carriage rides, face painting and visits by Santa Claus and Pip the Mouse. The actual tree lighting is scheduled for 5:30pm.
