Monday Romper Day Postponed to Tuesday

The City of Allentown’s 104th Annual Romper Day celebration at J. Birney Crum Stadium scheduled for tonight at 7 o’clock is postponed until tomorrow night at 7 o’clock.

Nearly 600 children from 20 Allentown playground sites are expected to take part.

Youngsters participate in track events and dance exercises from musical selections dating back more than 50 years ago.

The event includes a push-up and sit-up contest with champions from all 18 Summer Playground Program sites throughout the city taking on representatives of the Allentown Police Department. The top playground boys’ and girls’ winners will win a ride along with Chief Dorney and other prizes.

The Percy B. Ruhe Award will be given to the most outstanding boy and girl on the playgrounds that emulate the qualities recognized by Percy B. Ruhe.

Romper Day is sponsored by the city, the Allentown School District, The Trexler Trust and the Allentown Rotary Club.

The first Romper Day was held on August 28, 1914. Romper Day marks the traditional end of the city’s eight week Summer Playground Program.
