Parks & Recreation Capital Improvements

Stevens Park

The City of Allentown completed a park redesign at Stevens Park, with a grand opening in spring 2017. This project was funded by the city, DCNR, and CDBG monies and in-kind work. Improvements were made to park layout, and upgraded amenities include the pavilion, playground, walking path, and the addition of a community stage performing area.

Signage Plan

The City of Allentown completed a Master Way-Finding Signage Plan for the park system, and portions of this plan are being implemented as funding permits.

Aquatics Facilities Renovations

The City of Allentown is currently undergoing an assessment of its aquatics facilities and developing plans and construction documents for renovations to pools and spray parks throughout the city. Cedar Pool is currently undergoing a complete rebuild and renovation. In-house renovations of Bucky Boyle Spray Park were completed by the Parks Department during the Fall/Winter of 2015-16, and the filtration system and roof at Mack Pool will be replaced in fall 2017. Designs and plans for Irving, Jordan, and Fountain pools are pending.

Jordan Creek Greenways Trail:

A proposed trail is currently undergoing design to connect Turner Street to MacArthur Road. The trail will close a vital gap in a multi-municipality project to connect the City of Allentown to the Appalachian Trail along the Jordan Creek.

Dixon St. Dog Park:

Construction of a two-acre dog park is underway at Trout Creek Parkway. The design includes two areas to accommodate smaller and larger dogs, as well as a permitting process to ensure dogs are licensed, vaccinated and supervised by responsible pet owners.

Jordan Park Skate Park:

Designs for a skate park in the former clay tennis courts at Jordan Park is underway. Public meetings will be held in late Summer/early Fall 2017, and a final design is anticipated by Spring 2018.

Valania Park Master Plan:

An extensive public input process took place to develop a Master Plan for Valania Park during the Spring and Summer of 2017. Designs are anticipated to be finalized in the late Fall of 2017, and funding and grant opportunities identified and applied for during the winter of 2017-18 for a complete rebuild of this vital neighborhood park.
