When
the Allentown Band played at Carnegie Hall in April for the 10th annual New
York International Music Festival, one of the program's highlights was Dutch
composer Johan de Meij's Symphony No.4 (Symphony of Songs). Because of time
constraints, only selections of this striking piece for solo voice, treble
choir and wind orchestra were performed.
On
Sunday, September 25 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Allentown,
we'll get to hear the entire work, featuring mezzo soprano opera star Patricia
Risley and Women of the Touring Choir of the Lehigh Valley Charter High School
for the Arts, directed by David MacBeth. Also on the program are colorful
Latin-style dances by Perkins, Marquez and Morrissey, as well as the famous
"Dance of the Hours" from Ponchielli's "La Gioconda."
