Recycling Bureau Honored with Waste Watcher Award

The Allentown Recycling Bureau is being honored with a Waste Watcher Award from the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania for its outstanding public education program and rebranding with “Single Stream Scottie.”

The city embarked on a single stream recycling program in June 2016 after many years of dual stream collection. Education Manager, Kristin Baringer created a new education and marketing plan based on a new mascot, “Single Stream Scottie,” who was born on July 6, 2016!

Single Stream Scottie is the official mascot for the City of Allentown Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste. He helps educate children and adults on the importance of recycling, keeping Allentown clean and providing information on the other programs offered by the Bureau. Scottie is available for classroom demonstrations and to attend assemblies, education fairs or community events.

“Our recycling efforts are top-notch,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “I am very proud of our curbside collection program as well as our drop-off center, yard waste site and our special electronics collections. We have educated thousands of youngsters and they are taking the message back to their parents. I congratulate the bureau on the well-earned recognition.”

The Pennsylvania Waste Watchers program recognizes recycling, waste reduction, reuse and composting programs in Pennsylvania that have exhibited exemplary performance.

Recycling is a billion dollar industry in the state. It has saved precious resources and energy, limited greenhouse emissions as well as other air and water pollutants.
