City Enters Favorite Park Contest
A contest for America’s Favorite Park is underway and the City of Allentown is entering as one of the competitors.

Coca-Cola introduced its “Take It to the Park" contest last week. It encourages people to get active and live healthy lifestyles. The beverage manufacturer is giving away a $100,000 recreational grant to the park that receives the most votes. Allentown is hoping to receive votes for Cedar Beach Park to win one of the top grants.

“Cedar Beach Park is a well-known and well-loved open space, running through the central-western area of the city,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “People regularly jog on its paths, swim in its pool, walk around Muhlenberg Lake, play basketball or volleyball on its courts, and attend special events there by the thousands. Additionally, thousands of people bring their young children to the Destination Playground there.”

Persons may vote online once per day. Multiplier points may be earned by using several smart phone applications, including those which track fitness activity, and by voting on selected days. Double-count vote days are June 21, July 13 and July 14.

Director of Parks and Recreation John Mikowychok notes that the funds would be targeted toward improvements in the area of the basketball courts. “Depending on funds awarded, and the prizes range from $100,000 for first place to $15,000 for a ‘Wildcard’ grant, the city would use the funds to resurface the four basketball courts and adding water fountains, permanent bleachers, a Rain Garden and adult exercise equipment for parents at the playground.”

Persons may support Cedar Beach Park by voting daily and checking-in at the park. Plans are being developed to set-up voting booths at the upcoming, 18th Annual Stellar Basketball Tournament from July 11 to 14. Voting ends on July 15. To vote, go online at https://parks.livepositively.com/.
