Allentown Honors Andre Reed

The City of Allentown will unveil new signage to honor Allentown native and NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Reed on Monday, June 22 at 1:30pm.

Reed starred on the gridiron at Dieruff High School and Kutztown University and became a record-setting wide receiver on the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, playing in four consecutive Super Bowls during a 16 year career with Buffalo and the Washington Redskins. He was inducted in the NFL’s Hall of Fame last year.

City Council voted unanimously last October to rename Irving Park “Andre Reed Park” and to rename a portion of Washington Street between Irving and Jerome streets alongside Dieruff High School “Andre Reed Way.”

City officials will unveil a temporary sign at the park and the new street sign during the June 22 ceremony.

“Andre Reed has brought great honor to Allentown and it is only fitting for the city to recognize him in the area where he first made a name for himself,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski.

Reed currently resides in California. He is returning to Allentown for the ceremony and to host a number of events the following weekend, including the Andre Reed Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, June 29 at Lehigh Country Club which benefits the Andre Reed Foundation.

Reed established the foundation in 2010 to help underprivileged children meet their full potential and become responsible contributors to their communities.

The Allentown School Board voted last year to name the field at J. Birney Crum Stadium in Reed’s honor. A formal ceremony is being planned for this fall.
