Leak Closes Cedar Pool For Season

Allentown’s Cedar Beach Pool will not open for the 2015 season.

Water from the pool was leaking from an unknown source during preparation for the 2015 season and attempts to find the source of the leak have been unsuccessful.

This spring, city crews repaired expansion joints and surface cracks and painted the pool. As the pool was being filled, water leaked into the pool basement prompting the city to conduct a dye test which failed to identify the source of the leak.

Third party expert Video Pipe Services Inc. used a camera to examine portions of the pool’s piping system, but also did not find the leak. Much more extensive and expensive work is necessary to try to determine the source of the leak. Still to be determined would be the cost of those repairs, all prompting the decision to leave the pool closed for the season.

The city is exploring other alternatives and options for offering additional water services.

The city has engaged Spillman Farmer Architects of Bethlehem to review existing pools and design new pools for the city. Funds for new pools have been allocated in the city’s 2015 bond issue.

Cedar Beach Pool was built in 1951. Its filtration and chemical systems were replaced in 2002. It has a capacity of 780 persons.

The city will continue to operate Mack, Jordan and Irving pools with a combined capacity of nearly 2000 persons. Mack Pool will open Saturday, June 6 as scheduled.

The city is rescheduling some water programs that had been slated for Cedar Pool. The Learn to Swim program will be moved to Mack Pool; Morning Adult Lap Swim will be moved to Jordan Pool; and the June 19 Family Water Safety Day will be moved to Mack Pool.
