The Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center is setting its sights for a home at 1021 W. Turner Street.
Mayor Ed Pawlowski and project organizers announced this afternoon that they are working with the Allentown Redevelopment Authority to acquire the dilapidated 7,000 square foot building for $1.00.
The announcement on Turner Street was attended by some 30 persons to celebrate National LGBT Community Center Awareness Day.
The LGBT Center is named in honor of Liz Bradbury and her spouse, Dr. Patricia Sullivan. Bradbury will serve as Senior Director of Programs at the Center.
Pawlowski said, “Allentown is a diverse community. Any 21st century city that is active, growing and vibrant is going to be diverse. We celebrate that diversity today with the announcement of the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center. We’re pleased to be able to assist in the effort to bring services to the people of the community.”
According to Center Founder and Executive Director Adrian Shanker, “Once built, the Center will provide an array of programs and services including support/discussion groups, programs for youth and seniors, gallery space, meeting space for smaller LGBT non-profits and more.”
