4th Annual Leadership Institute Scheduled

Calling all leaders!

On Saturday, May 31, at Sacred Heart Hospital Conference Center, residents have an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills by attending the 4th Annual Leadership Institute.

Scheduled from 9am to 3:30pm, adult attendees will be offered training in the areas of Communication, Cultural Sensitivity, How to be a Servant Leader, and a Personal Leadership Clinic for Advanced Leadership. Connecting with the Real You and Life Skills Tune-Up workshops are being offered for teens.

The speakers are talented and well versed in their subject area and include: HYPE Director Jenna Azar, Professor Latif Matt, Pastor Gregory Edwards, educator Shannon Mayfield, Pastor Darian and Yolanda Colbert and Senior NCBI trainer Phyllis Alexander. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

The training is open to residents interested in coordinating neighborhood activities for the first time, to current leaders who want to rejuvenate neighborhood activities and to residents who simply want to hone the leadership skills they practice in their many roles.

Teens who are either aspiring leaders or currently leaders are encouraged to attend both interactive workshops. The Connecting with the Real You session will teach teens how to stay true to themselves and be themselves no matter what the environment. The Life Skills Tune-up is being taught by the dynamic husband wife team of Pastor Darian and Yolanda Colbert who will remind teens of the importance of time management, how to deal with disappointment/failure/death, cultural sensitivity and the importance of goals.

Past attendees have found the training very informative. “This workshop was an easy way to practice community building on a small manageable scale,” said Rachel Lang. “I laughed, I thought deeply, and I think I’m better for it. Hopefully I might be able to jump right into leadership roles now that I know I can.” Carol Johnson was equally pleased. “This was an excellent Leadership Workshop. I encourage any individual in a leadership position to take the next class and bring youth leaders with you. Leadership skills are always ongoing,” said Johnson.

The Neighborhood Resident Leaders program helps residents to connect with each other and with the city.

If you would like to attend the training, e-mail City of Allentown Neighborhood Coordinator Phyllis.Alexander@allentownpa.gov or call 610 437-7679. Registration for the Leadership Institute closes on May 23, 2014.
