Grant Funds Swim Lessons

The City of Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation is ready to teach two dozen 11-to-14-year-olds how to swim.

The department is the recipient of $5,000 in grant funding from the Pool and Hot Tub Alliance’s Step Into Swim program.

Funds from the Step Into Swim grant will enhance the positive impact of the city’s aquatics program by offering learn to swim sessions to young people who otherwise might not have the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons.

Free Learn to Swim Lessons for city residents only will be taught by a certified instructor at Cedar Beach Pool and are limited to 12 participants per week.

Since 2012, the Pool & Hot Tub Foundation has supported thousands of swim lessons across the globe and played a role in reducing swimming fatalities through this program. The Step Into Swim™ Campaign is a 10-year initiative to create 1 million more swimmers.

Step Into Swim announced a total of nearly $100,000 in grants awarded to 22 YMCAs, community centers, city parks and recreation departments, camps, and other facilities that are giving swimming lessons to youth in their community.

Allentown municipal pools follow all current CDC and PA Department of Health COVID-19 Guidelines. Pool and Spray Park users are highly encouraged not to attend or participate if they are experiencing signs of COVID-19 such as fever, coughing, shortness of breath and loss of taste or smell.
