Large Water Main Break at 17th & Walnut

Lehigh County Authority crews are responding to a large water main break at 17th and Walnut streets in Allentown.

Residents reported water pressure problems to LCA beginning at approximately 12:30 p.m. today, and localized street flooding occurred in the vicinity of the break. The water main is a 30-inch diameter high-pressure water line that serves water storage and pumping facilities in portions of the City and surrounding communities. Widespread pressure fluctuations were reported.

LCA crews have isolated the broken water line so all flooding is now contained, and emergency repair crews are on the scene to assess damage and begin the repair.

Residents are advised to limit their use of water if possible and avoid the area as significant traffic disruptions are expected due to street cleaning and repair work. South 17th Street will be closed between Union and Walnut streets while the repairs are made.

Customers who experienced low pressure or cloudy water should have full service at this time.

Some cloudy water may continue for a period of time until the air in the line is flushed out.

A boil-water advisory was put in effect Wednesday for Westmount Apartments in the 600 block of Primrose Drive, which has 160 residential units. It was lifted Friday afternoon.

The cause of the break is unknown at this time. Additional updates will be posted on LCA’s website at www.lehighcountyauthority.org as well as on their social media sites on Facebook and Twitter
