Tilghman St Bridge Project Begins Jan 22

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced today the start of a project to rehabilitate the Tilghman Street Bridge in Allentown will begin Monday. It was previously scheduled to begin January 10, but was postponed twice due to winter weather.

Next Monday through Wednesday motorists should be alert for lane restrictions during daylight hours on the Tilghman Street Bridge.

Also, next Monday through Thursday motorists should be alert for daylight lane restrictions at the following intersections while crews implement traffic signal modifications to prepare for the Tilghman Street Bridge closure: Tilghman Street at Ridge Avenue; Tilghman Street at Front Street; Union Boulevard at North Dauphin Street; American Parkway at Ridge Avenue; American Parkway at North Bradford Street; and North Dauphin Street at North Bradford Street.

On Thursday, January 25 Tilghman Street will be closed and detoured between Front and Dauphin streets, and remain closed for the duration of the bridge project. The posted detour will utilize Front Street, American Parkway, North Bradford Street and Dauphin Street. Motorists are advised to expect delays and use caution traveling on the detour route.

Pedestrian access will be maintained on the bridge throughout construction.

Work on the project includes bridge rehabilitation, deck replacement, roadway approach reconstruction, lighting upgrades, drainage work, concrete curb and sidewalk upgrades, signing and pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.

The Tilghman Street Bridge is a 12-span concrete open spandrel arch bridge originally constructed in 1929 and reconstructed in 1995. It is 1,387 feet long and 53 feet wide. This section of Tilghman Street has an average daily traffic of 17,398 vehicles.

D.A. Collins Construction Co., Inc. of Wilton, NY, is the general contractor on the $21,904,045 project that is expected to be complete in June 2021.
