Temporary Closings of 8th St Bridge

08/26/2014
Temporary Closings of 8th St Bridge

The contractor at the Eighth Street Bridge rehabilitation project will implement a daytime detour on Wednesday, September 24 from 9am to 3pm for bridge deck placements.

Northbound traffic will be detoured on St. John Street, South Sixth Street, West Wyoming Street, South Fifth Street, Auburn Street, Lehigh Street, Union Street, South Sixth Street and Linden Street. Access will be maintained for pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

A project began in May to rehabilitate the Eighth Street/Albertus L. Meyers Bridge that traverses the Little Lehigh Creek, Norfolk Southern Rail Road, Harrison Street, Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Fountain Park.

For the duration of the project the southbound travel lane on the bridge is closed and detoured. The posted detour for southbound traffic uses Union and Lehigh streets. To accommodate the detour, the city has temporarily implemented a two-way traffic pattern on Union Street between Seventh and Eighth streets for the duration of the project.

Pedestrian access is being maintained with one of the two sidewalks remaining open during construction.

The project is scheduled to be complete in December 2016. All schedules are subject to change.

IEW Construction Group, Inc. of Trenton, NJ is the general contractor on the $18,541,535.84 project.

The Eighth Street/Albertus L. Meyers Bridge was originally constructed in 1913 and rehabilitated in 1973. It is a 17-span, concrete open spandrel arch bridge with nine main spans and eight reinforced concrete T-beam approach spans. It is 1,959 feet long and 46 feet wide and has an average daily traffic volume of 16,950 vehicles.
