More than 500 persons have made reservations to attend the Pennsylvania Society’s 116th Annual Meeting and Luncheon in Allentown today. The event is being held under a tent at Sixth and Linden streets. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett is among those expected to attend.

Founded in 1899, the Pennsylvania Society is the longest-lived organization of its kind in the country.

According to its website, “The Society is a non-profit, charitable organization with over two thousand members around the Commonwealth, the United States and the world. It is not affiliated with any particular political party, business or profession. Its purpose is to honor achievement, to reward excellence, to promote good will and understanding and to celebrate service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to humanity in general.”

“We are pleased and proud that The Pennsylvania Society selected Allentown as the site for its annual meeting and luncheon,” said Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “We are a city on the move and we are excited to show-off our progress to the many members and their guests.”

More than 50 members were in town last night for the President’s Reception and Dinner held at The Cosmopolitan.

Society President James E. Nevels will be succeeded by Nick DeBenedictis. DeBenedictis is chairman of Aqua America and is a past Pennsylvania Secretary of the Department of Environmental Resources.
