The City of Allentown along with the Allentown Police Department (APD) is deeply saddened to announce the death of one of its own. 

Detective (Det.) James Stanko, 51, passed away this morning in the presence of loved ones.  

Det. Stanko joined APD in February 2009, and most recently served as Youth Detective assigned to the Community Outreach Unit. He was devoted to public service and was an integral part of the Community Outreach Unit. He was involved in various programs including the Police Athletic League (PAL); the Cedar Crest College Center for Police Innovation and Community Engagement; Opioid Crisis Initiative; L.I.F.E. Program; Youth Police Academy; Boys and Girls Club; Communities in Schools; among so many others. 

"It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Det. Jim Stanko this morning,” said Police Chief Charles Roca. “Jim is the type of officer that represents the highest values and ideals of the Allentown Police Department. The positive impact that he made with so many people, speaks to his character and the legacy that he established. From the PAL program to our community policing initiatives, amongst many others. My deepest condolences and prayers of support go to his family and our department during this time. I want to say thank you to our community for the outpouring of prayers and support for Jim." 

“Our Allentown Police Department is better for the years of service that Det. Stanko gave, and his life and career provide a great example of the impact that one person can have on a community,” said Mayor Matt Tuerk. “The people of Allentown will miss his kindness and grieve with Jim’s family.”

Det. Stanko’s death will not only have a profound impact within the City and the Department, but across the entire community, where he was a friend to many.

APD and the entire City of Allentown expresses its deepest sympathies to Det. Stanko’s family and friends, as we mourn the loss of a great friend, colleague, and community leader. 

He is survived by his wife Sharon and daughters Lily and Brooke. 

We ask that his family, and other APD officers’ and their families’ privacy be respected during this profoundly difficult time. No further comment will be made at this time. 

 

La Ciudad de Allentown junto con el Departamento de Policía de Allentown (APD) se entristece profundamente al anunciar la muerte de uno de los suyos.

El detective (Det.) James Stanko, de 51 años, falleció esta mañana en presencia de sus seres queridos.

Det. Stanko se unió a APD en febrero de 2009 y, más recientemente, se desempeñó como Detective Juvenil asignado a la Unidad de Alcance Comunitario. Él se dedicó al servicio público y fue parte integral de la Unidad de Alcance Comunitario. Estuvo involucrado en varios programas, incluyendo la Liga Atlética de la Policía (PAL); el Centro de Innovación Policial y Participación Comunitaria de Cedar Crest College; Iniciativa de Crisis de Opioides; Programa de L.I.F.E.; Academia de Policía Juvenil; Club de Niños y Niñas; Comunidades en las Escuelas; entre tantos otros.

"Era con gran tristeza que me enteré del fallecimiento de Det. Jim Stanko esta mañana", dijo el jefe de policía Charles Roca. "Jim es el tipo de oficial que representa los valores e ideales más altos del Departamento de Policía de Allentown. El impacto positivo que hizo con tanta gente, habla de su carácter y el legado que estableció. Desde el programa PAL hasta nuestras iniciativas de policía comunitaria, entre muchas otras. La muerte de Det. Stanko no solo tendrá un profundo impacto dentro de la Ciudad y el Departamento, sino en toda la comunidad, en la cual él era amigo de muchos.

APD y toda la Ciudad de Allentown expresan sus más profundas condolencias a la familia y los amigos del Det. Stanko, mientras lamentamos la pérdida de un gran amigo, colega y líder comunitario.

Le sobreviven su esposa Sharon y sus hijas Lily y Brooke.
