Christmas Eve Last Night for Lights in the Parkway

Christmas Eve Last Night for Lights in the Parkway

The Lights in the Parkway display will close for the season on December 24 two nights ahead of schedule.

Department of Community & Economic Development Director Leonard Lightner says Lights in the Parkway is a victim of its own success.

“We anticipated higher attendance due to the gathering restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the weekend numbers have proven to be more than we can accommodate,” Lightner said. “Even with putting a new traffic pattern in place this season, additional signage, cones, an extra lane, pre-purchase tickets to expedite entrance, more volunteer participation and additional support from fire police, we have become overwhelmed.”

More than 15,000 vehicles have entered Lights in the Parkway so far this season even with three nights lost to inclement weather. There are approximately 5,000 tickets outstanding.

Lights in the Parkway opened the night after Thanksgiving and unlike other years it has stayed open seven days a week instead of five in anticipation of higher attendance.

Persons who may find themselves unable to use their tickets are asked to email their questions, concerns, and or feedback to EVENTS@allentownpa.gov. Due to the volume of inquiries there may be a delay in receiving a response.

Lightner said, “We will start in January to look at what changes we can make to improve the visitor experience next season.  Lights in the Parkway is a 24-year-old tradition that sparks nostalgia. It is a labor of love for our park workers who put up the displays and for our staff workers and volunteers.
