Closed Buildings; Street Cleaning Suspension Extended
Allentown city government buildings will remain closed to the public through Friday, April 17.

Mayor Ray O’Connell closed city buildings on March 25 after Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf issued a “Stay at Home” order for Lehigh and Northampton counties. The mayor’s original order was good until Monday, April 6.

The governor’s order seeks to save lives and stop the spread of COVID-19 which according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health has infected 7016 persons in Pennsylvania. There are 479 cases in Lehigh County. As of yesterday afternoon, 207 of the Lehigh County cases are in Allentown.

Mayor O’Connell is also extending his March 17 order suspending the city’s street cleaning program through Sunday, April 19. Although residents may still see a sweeper operating on their street, no street cleaning tickets will be issued during the suspension.

Governor Wolf has ordered all non-essential businesses to close through April 30 to help mitigate the spread of the virus.

As a result, more vehicles are parked on all city streets leaving those vehicles on designated street cleaning streets with little place to go.
