Public Works Hiring for Summer
The Allentown Department of Public Works is seeking to hire employees for various seasonal positions. These positions are a great employment opportunity for those who enjoy interaction with the public and offering great customer service to the residents of Allentown; positions start at $10.00 per hour.

Most seasonal laborer positions in Public Works are Monday through Friday which allow successful candidates to enjoy summer weekends off.

The Bureau of Building Maintenance seasonal laborers assist with maintaining archived city records, inventorying the stock room, updating the inventory tracking system and assisting city crews in the performance of general building maintenance work. Prior work experience is not required.

The Office of Compliance is looking for a paid intern. Working under the direction of the Compliance Auditors, the prospective intern will assist in oversight of the water system lease and archive regulatory files in compliance with state and federal programs. This position requires a flexible and technically proficient individual to perform functions in both the office and field. The prospective intern should be an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student; preference will be given to those with coursework in Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Library Sciences.

The Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste summer labor positions are available to those applicants age 18 and over. Employees perform a wide variety of tasks related to trash, recycling, and the cleanliness of the city; including but not limited to working at the yard waste site and/or recycling drop-off center; graffiti abatement and collecting recyclable materials. This position is a great employment opportunity for those with a commitment to waste reduction and recycling practices. Some Saturdays may be required as part of the Bureau’s work schedule.

Seasonal laborers in the Bureau of Streets are provided with hands-on landscaping experience through a wide variety of tasks involved in the cleanliness and repair of city roadways. Summer laborers will also assist stormwater crews with the maintenance of various manholes, inlets, and safety grates located throughout the city. All are necessary components in maintaining the city’s stormwater infrastructure.

The Bureau of Traffic Planning and Control is looking for a paid intern as well as seasonal laborers.

The intern will assist with items such as: signal file management, obtaining traffic and pedestrian counts, conducting speed studies, accident analysis and installing thermoplastic/line painting pavement markings. The prospective intern should be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student and possess a keen interest in public works projects and a desire to pursue career pathways in the public sector.

Seasonal laborers in the Bureau of Traffic Planning and Control will perform a variety of duties to prepare, install and repair/replace various roadway signs, pavement markings, and other traffic control devices throughout the city.
