City Council has unanimously confirmed Mayor Ray O’Connell’s nominations of Glenn Granitz as police chief and Craig Messinger as public work director.

Granitz was named interim police chief last month following the retirement of interim Chief Tony Alsleben. Messinger has been serving as interim director of public works since 2014.

Granitz joined the department in 2001. He was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) as a detective in 2005. In 2010 Granitz was promoted to Detective/Sergeant in CID overseeing investigations in the areas of homicides, robberies, sexual assaults, property crimes and more. In 2013 Granitz was selected to lead the Youth & Community Services Division of APD, and during that time he oversaw APD’s Gang Intelligence initiatives. Granitz was promoted to lieutenant in May 2015 and was assigned to the third platoon. He was promoted to captain in August 2017 serving center city, overseeing the fourth platoon and all officers assigned to patrol the center city area, including the Center City Bike Unit.

Messinger began full-time employment with the city in the Streets Department in 1989. He became Operations Administrator in the Streets Department in 2000; was promoted to Assistant Streets Superintendent in 2005 and became Streets Superintendent in 2006. He was promoted to Deputy Public Works Director in 2012.

Council set Granitz’ salary at $131,300 annually. Messinger will earn $121,500.
